Santa Clara transfer guard Christian Hammond holds a unique place in NC State’s rebuild. He was the first player to commit to NC State under new head coach Justin Gainey.

That distinction matters. He’s not just part of the foundation. He is the first brick.

Hammond’s journey to Raleigh wasn’t linear. After a quiet freshman season at Santa Clara (3.7 points in 12.4 minutes per game), former NC State head coach Herb Sendek made the uncommon decision to redshirt him in Year 2, which proved to be a move that would change everything.

When Hammond returned in Year 3, he broke out in a major way, averaging 15.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He earned First Team All-WCC honors while shooting 48.4% from the field and 39.3% from three.

I recently caught up with Hammond to talk about that redshirt year, his decision to choose NC State, and what he brings to the Wolfpack.

Conversation

Pack Pride: You redshirted your second year and returned this season to earn All-WCC honors. Walk me through your redshirt year, and how it prepared you for what you were able to accomplish this season.

Hammond: The redshirt year was hard, as I was eager to play, but I trusted the coaching staff and waited for my opportunity. I took advantage in the weight room getting stronger, and sharpening up my shooting and reads on the court

Pack Pride: After entering the Portal, you don’t visit any other schools besides NC State. What was it about NC State that led you to be so laser focused in your decision to run with the Wolfpack?

Hammond: The coaching staff was amazing! I could see myself playing for the staff and they love the game. The culture of the school was amazing, so it was a no brainer for me.

Pack Pride: What was your familiarity with NC State before now? Did you have any connections with the school, staff, former staff or players?

Hammond: I’ve always known about NC State and I’ve know Jordan Snell since I was little

Pack Pride: Walk us through your official visit. What was Coach Gainey’s vision for you and the program he wants to build?

Hammond: The official visit was cool, just getting to know the staff…talking basketball. We watched some film and broke down play-style, and areas of improvement. He just wants guys that want to win

Pack Pride: How would you describe your game? Are there any players that have influenced your style of play?

Hammond: I play both ends of the court. I’m a scorer from 3 levels, and I’m unselfish. I want to do whatever it takes to win.

Pack Pride: What do you think about the roster Coach Gainey has put together thus far?

Hammond: I like the roster a lot. I think we have a talented group of guys, so I’m excited

Hammond’s path says a lot about what NC State is getting.

Patience. Development. Confidence earned the hard way.

And now, a guard who can score at all three levels and set the tone on both ends of the floor.
