TROUBLE IN CHAPEL HILL? UNC football GM put on ‘administrative leave’ effective immediately

The Bill Belichick/Tar Heel saga looks like it’s carrying on into year 2 as GM Michael Lombardi was put on administrative leave effective immediately.

Lombardi, a longtime Belichick associate with more than 30 years of NFL front-office experience (including stints with the Patriots, Browns as GM in 2013, Raiders, 49ers, Eagles, and Broncos), was Belichick’s first major hire after the coach took the UNC job two years ago. He arrived with a $1.5 million annual salary, reportedly the highest for a college football GM at the time, and a three-year deal running through early 2028.

UNC’s official statement offered no specifics on the reason:

“The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has placed Michael Lombardi, general manager for the Carolina football program, on paid administrative leave, effective immediately. As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on the merits.”

ESPN’s Pete Thamel later reported that the move stems from a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC front-office employee, with a pending investigation. University policy allows administrative leave (typically not exceeding 30 days for employees in Lombardi’s category) during probes into job performance or personal conduct.

Lombardi’s tenure has been eventful, to say the least.

He publicly framed UNC as the “33rd NFL team,” emphasizing a pro-style approach to roster-building and operations in the NIL/transfer-portal era.

The Tar Heels went 4-8 in Belichick’s debut 2025 season amid reports of roster missteps and internal tension. Other off-field noise included Lombardi’s August 2025 exploratory fundraising trip to Saudi Arabia (paid for by a private Saudi host interested in supporting Belichick; UNC clarified it was not a PIF investment meeting) and broader program scrutiny. His son, Matt Lombardi, remains on staff as quarterbacks coach. Preseason camp is set to open this week, with the season starting Aug. 29 against TCU in Ireland.

No interim GM has been named publicly, and Belichick and staff are barred from commenting.
