NC State has added another defensive back to its future secondary.

JUCO cornerback Dy’Lan Johnson announced today that he will be running with the Wolfpack after receiving an offer from NC State just two weeks ago.

The recruitment moved quickly.

And clearly, the Pack made a strong impression.

Junior College Standout

Johnson just wrapped up his freshman season at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Mississippi.

From a recruiting standpoint, 247Sports rates Johnson as a 3-star JUCO prospect and ranks him as:

No. 79 overall JUCO player nationally
No. 6 JUCO cornerback

Offer List

Johnson’s recruitment picked up momentum quickly this spring.

Most notably, he recently earned an offer from LSU Tigers football during a campus visit a couple weekends ago.

His offer sheet also included:

Kansas State
Jackson State
Troy
North Alabama

Johnson was also receiving interest from Auburn.

Ultimately, NC State won out.

Brian Mitchell Connection

A couple of weeks ago, Johnson informed me that NC State cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell planned to visit him personally.

That relationship-building effort clearly mattered.

The Wolfpack staff moved aggressively after offering, and it paid off quickly with a commitment.

Two-Way Background

Before heading to the JUCO level, Johnson played at Baldwyn High School in Mississippi.

Interestingly, he wasn’t just a defensive back.

Johnson played both Quarterback and Free Safety.

As a Quarterback, he completed 61.5% of his passes for 1,610 yards and 16 touchdowns (4 interceptions), while rushing for 484 yards (6.1 ypc) and 12 touchdowns.

As a Free Safety, Johnson racked up 3 interceptions, 2 pass breakups, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble.
