State Survives Sloppy Outing vs Tigers 66-61

Published

on

Defense must be what NC State hangs their hats on each game. The second half was a clinic as the Pack was able to crank up the defensive pressure and held Clemson without a FG for 14 consecutive minutes. The way State accomplished this task was in their ability to keep Clemson out of the paint. Our guards were fantastic with their on-ball defense and consistently forced Clemson to attack horizontally in the second half. Not to be out done by the guards NC State big men were solid in securing the glass and great in giving help-side defense.

At times this game was difficult to watch as the Pack struggled mightily to find a scoring touch. Trevor Lacey had an uncharacteristic night as he was 2-11 from the field; however,  State found a way to get the win despite their leader having an off night. As much as Trevor struggled his partner in crime Ralston Turner picked up the slack. The Red-Shirt Senior was excellent tonight as he found a way to fight through a hard nose defense to score 23 points. Even though Ralston wasn’t too impressive from the field (4-12) he got himself to the free-throw line. On the night he finished 12-15 from the charity stripe and was able to keep the Tigers at distance down the stretch.

I cannot express how clutch the Wolfpack was from the free-throw line as both Ralston and Caleb were able to step up and knock down their shots in the waning moments of the game. Clemson proved to not give up as they found a way to extend the game. Gabe DeVoe hit some incredibly difficult shots in the last minute to keep the Tigers close. He finished the game with 18 points and was the key reason why this game seemed like it would not end. Cat Barber finished with 16 points but was very generous in turning the ball over as he had 7 TO’s. Rod Hall played Cat very well and used his experience to force Cat into some difficult positions. State was very lucky to escape Little John Coliseum with a win as Lacey and Barber were less than spectacular. I will note that even though Cat made mistakes he continued to play hard and contributed some key plays that were important to keep the Pack on top.

With tonight’s win NC State finds themselves at 9-8 in the ACC with one game remaining. Personally I think that it speaks volumes about our team as they were able to forget a terrible outing two days ago at Boston College. Our guys were tough all night and did not allow Clemson to get a win on Senior Night. As we take a step back the Pack is 4-1 in their last 5 outings with wins at Louisville, UNC, and now at Clemson. I think that’s pretty impressive as each venue has given the Wolfpack struggles in the past. This Saturday NC State must be prepared to defend their home court as they host the Syracuse Orangemen. This will be the last game of the season for Syracuse as they are ineligible for post season play. You better believe that they are going to come out and play with outstanding effort and energy. It is important that State gets a win this Saturday as a win would lock them into the NCAA Tournament. Tip-Off is scheduled for 12PM. You can catch the action on CBS.

gdtann Wolfer96 wolfpack74 Cat better keep improving and remain health because we just lost another potential PG (Carter to Marq).  Great recruiting year so far.  Not.

gdtann Wolfer96 wolfpack74 I agree any improvement was better than a tree stump and a choke point that he played earlier.  Now if we can just get Kyle more playing time, I would feel better about this team.

Well his good game vs Syracuse likely earned his more minutes vs Pitt now. It’s not like Gott is gonna change his gameplan mid game when we’re up by 10, obviously his plan was working

Wolfer96 gdtann wolfpack74  I understand.  But this isn’t a man crush.  This is facts.  If you can’t tell Cat is playing entirely different right now then I just can’t help you.  This isn’t an opinion and I don’t think you understand that.  This is facts.   As for why we’ve won over the past couple of weeks.  No one has improved their game more and more consistently than Cat.  He was getting 2 points a game at a point in the ACC season.  Now you can count on him for at least 10.  And he controls the pace.  Without that turn around… Read more »

wolfpack74 gdtann PPBalls I agree, Kyle played great defense against Syracuse.  And I agree he should have been in there more, he is just a better option at the high post because he is a threat to score.

gdtann wolfpack74 Wolfer96 Hey there’s nothing wrong with man crushing. Many a Wolfpack fan has a man crush on Julius Hodge, TJ Warren, David Thompson, Rodney Monroe, Chris Corchiani, etc. but my question would be why man crush on Cat? Those that I listed above have earned man crush status.  If by next season Cat comes in shooting 50% from 2, 36% from 3, has 7 apg to 2 tpg, learns how to make good interior passes consistently then yeah he may have earned it. But at this point? I don’t think so. Let him lead this team to a deep NCAA… Read more »

gdtann wolfpack74 PPBalls Who says he pays bad defense?  Played only six minutes today, with one rebound and three blocks (against Christmas no less).  What more do you want him to do?  Although we won handily, there were several times that Washington in the middle would have been a lot more successful than no shot Freeman.  Freeman is useless on offense and a Coach that has something against a player will say anything to cover his ass.

wolfpack74 gdtann Wolfer96 That article was written before the BC game.  If you’d bother to read it.  Also math isn’t a problem for me.  I tutor math and have a masters degree in computer science.  You don’t get to where I am at without being good at math.  So if you look at the numbers from the article he had 25 assist and 8 turnovers from Ga Tech to the UNC game.  Thats the span of 6 games.  That’s also a 3 to 1 assist to turnover ration.  Now the clemson game they gave cat 7 turnovers, which obviously isn’t good.  So… Read more »

wolfpack74 gdtann PPBalls Gott said himself that he used a mixture of advanced statistics and looking at tape about Washington playing time.  I don’t have access to his statistics so I have to take him at his word.  Thats not something people tend to lie about either you are believer in that stuff or not.  You said Powell left the team because he didn’t play much.  His minutes per game disproves that.   Leaving for the NBA and transferring are completely two different things.  Yes at face value they mean the same thing for State, that player being gone, but if you… Read more »

gdtann wolfpack74 PPBalls First, who in hell thinks that Gott does any coaching at all with advanced statistics.  Playing at short interval intermittently does not lend itself to statistics that are meaniful.  Second, do you have any proof of your advanced mathematics (16-14).  Third, I said Powell left the team.  I said nothing about him transferring.  But in a since, transferring and moving to the NBA is the same result for NCState. Fourth, if he doesn’t get to play much the rest of this season, he should transfer.  I am primarily trying to say that Gott (or someone on the staff) needs… Read more »

Wolfer96 gdtann This isn’t cherry picking, this is a distinct moment where a player began playing much better and continued to play better.  That isn’t cherry picking. Look I don’t have to explain myself on here.  This isn’t BS and you’ll just continue to look dumb as time passes.   In the last 6 games Cat has averaged 18 points per game and 3/1 assist to turn over ratio.  He’s been more efficient with his scoring too. gdtann Wolfer96 I think you need to check your facts because nothing you say is based on anything than BS And I don’t cherry picks games where Cat’s done good or bad I look at the entire season.

2014 stats – 24.2 mpg, 8.5 ppg, 3.5 apg, 1.7 tpg
2015 stats – 31.3 mpg, 11.8 ppg, 3.7 apg 2.1 tpg

How is that an improvement? He’s playing 7 more minutes a game and his apg are .2 better and he’s turning the ball over more. If that’s your idea of improvement then I’m not impressed.

wolfpack74 gdtann PPBalls This is how stats can lie.  Gott said himself he looked at the advanced statistics and saw that the team played better with Freeman and Abu on the court.  That .500 from 3 stat is a LIE. He is only a .500 three point shoot because of a small sample size.   Look we all agree that Kyle is our best offensive big.  Its just that his scoring simply doesn’t make up for what he gives up in defense.  Look at the Boston College game.  Kyle had a great offensive game but couldn’t stop his man.  If Kyle puts… Read more »

gdtann Wolfer96 Well it’s well noted that Anya has the worst hands in the league. However, as a PG it’s your job to understand each teammate on the floor and deliver the ball in a way that they can receive it. Cat had the same problem last season with Vandenberg. Kept passing the ball low and led to turnovers. Lewis didn’t have the same problem getting the ball to Vandy so I can only assume that Cat was not as good a passer as Lewis. To me personally, a PG’s most important skills are ball control and passing. Cat has the… Read more »

gdtann wolfpack74 PPBalls He shoots .449 overall and .500 from 3, and .714 for free throws.  You can’t say that about any of our bigs and most of the other guys.  if you leave Turner on the floor with his defense weaknesses and lately poor shoot percentages, then you can surely use Kyle anytime.

PPBalls gdtann wolfpack74 He has only played 38 minutes in the last five games.  One of those games he played 18 minutes with 14 pts and 7 rebounds.  Why is he sitting on the bench? and don’t tell me he doesn’t play defense because he has the second most blocks and is the second leading rebounder and our best front court scorer.  Play him or let him go.  Remember when Sendek sat Powell a lot at the end of the year.  The next year he was gone.  Same thing should happen to Kyle.

gdtann wolfpack74  Agreed, why in gods name do you think he should transfer??  He still has a ton of potential to be a very good basketball player.  Having that depth like stated above is a huge advantage we have on this team, also thats not saying he won’t have his moments where he will get big minutes. Just right now this is a team who’s bread and butter is our Defense.  We are not and at this point of the season will not become a great scoring team this year.  Agreed with Turner, and if he’s off then he is better… Read more »

wolfpack74 PPBalls no he does not need to transfer.  He just need to work on his defensive game over the summer.  Whats wrong with you?  Why would you want someone to transfer?  One of the great things about this  years team is not having to worry about fouls because we have so much depth in the front court.  I remember when they only had Leslie and Howell and any time they got 2 fouls in the first half it was a precarious situation after that.  I prefer this much better.  Washington needs to stay get better on defense and refine his… Read more »

PPBalls wolfpack74 He may be a liability on defense (probably not nearly as bad as Turner) but he is second on the team in rebounding and fourth in scoring.  Outside of layups and dunks he scores more than Anya, Abu and Freeman combined.  If Gott continues to sit him during big games and as we started this thread, then he needs to transfer.

wolfpack74 While Kyle can score some, he is a liability on D and rebounding.  While he may be long and lanky, he lacks any real strength to bang down low with a bigger or stronger 4 or 5. Watching him all season I’ve noticed on too many occasions him getting bumped out of the way on a rebound or his guy getting way too deep in the post on him and getting easy buckets.  I think Gott has realized that this team wins when it plays solid D and rebound the ball, more-so than when we are scoring in the… Read more »

blow000 Wolfer96 wolfpack74 Like you said Kyle goes into this gotta score now mode when he gets the ball. And it doesn’t matter where he gets it or how much time is on the shot clock. Now as much as I would love for Freeman or any other BIG to contribute more, I just have not seen that skill set from any one of them. Anya has really bad hands and has no idea what to do with the ball outside of 3-4 feet from the rim. Abu takes it strong to the hoop but is not a good finisher unless it’s… Read more »

Wolfer96 wolfpack74 I like kyle and i think he can be a vital part of the team, but i feel like more than half his shots come from more than 15′ away from the basket within the first 10-15 seconds of the shot clock. In my opinion that leads to lost opportunity’s with little time taken off the clock. I also think if our bigs were not so busy setting endless screens for 3 pointers they could position themselves for more offensive putbacks. Freeman could rack up 10 – 15 a game on junk points alone. Go Pack!

wolfpack74 Wolfer96 You are right, this is a guard dominated offense. Gott’s teams always tend to be one-dimensional in some aspect. While I would love to see a more balanced attack on offense, I don’t know that Kyle is the key to that? And as you well know Anya, Abu, and Freeman don’t operate very well out of the post.  At this point in the season, we pretty much know what we have in this team and that’s not going to change. They are who they are. We have a couple of big guards in Turner and Lacey with the latter… Read more »

Wolfer96 wolfpack74 Yeah, where ever the big guys reside.  You’re talking about black hole, just look at our back court.  2-11, Lacey; 4-12, Turner, 6-11, Barber (good).  That’s 34 shots out of 46.  I would call that a big black hole.  Kyle is the only offensive player that we have in the front court.  We can’t afford to just run around the three point circle and shoot.  As I said before, he should transfer and develop his scoring ability with some team that appreciates his skills.  Gott only wants the bigs scoring layups and dunks.

wolfpack74 Did you mean Front court? I’ll tell you the problem with Kyle… he is the best we have at scoring around the basket but he falls in love with the longer jumper. And he has a tendency to become a black hole on offense.

What this team is missing is back court scoring.  So in Gott’s infinite wisdom, he is keeping Washington on the bench.  What’s going on with that?  Kyle’s shooting percentages are just as good as Lacey, Turner, or Barber.  He also rebounds.  If I was Kyle, I would be looking to transfer as soon as possible.

That was one ugly sloppy game for both teams. Has State ever held a team scoreless for 10 minutes? I recall several times under Sendek when we were held scoreless for what seemed like an eternity but never the other way around. A combination of good defense by the Pack and sloppy play by Clemson won this game. When will Cat ever pass the ball to an open man? Especially on that fast break with Caleb wide open. Cat keeps it and misses the layup. It’s astounding how poor his court vision is. The Pack needed this one bad. So… Read more »

NC State has Dominated UNC in Athletics in 2023-24

Published

on

After NC State clinched a series victory over UNC last night in Baseball, I thought it would be a good time to relish in how the Wolfpack has dominated the Tar Heels Athletic Program as a whole in 2023-24.

The Wolfpack Baseball team has won the first two games in the series against the Tar Heels, clinching a series victory over UNC for the first time since 2021. It marks the first time NC State has won a series against the Tar Heels in Raleigh since 2016.

NC State defeated UNC in Volleyball 3-1, winning in Chapel Hill for the first time in 25 years. The Tar Heels had won the last 5 matches against the Wolfpack.

The Wolfpack defeated the Tar Heels 39-20 in Football in Carter-Finley Stadium. It marked the 3rd consecutive win over UNC.

NC State lost both regular season games to UNC in Men’s Basketball, but when it mattered most, the Wolfpack defeated the Tar Heels in the ACC Championship Game 84-76, winning their first title since 1987.

The Wolfpack Women’s Basketball team lost to their rival in Chapel Hill, but defeated UNC 63-59 in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State has won 5 of the last 7 against UNC.

In Gymnastics, NC State defeated UNC 196.725-194.925 in Raleigh. This marked the 3rd straight victory for the Wolfpack over the Tar Heels.

NC State’s Men & Women’s Swimming & Diving teams both beat UNC. The Men won 258-93, and the Women won 196-157.

The Wolfpack Wrestling team defeated UNC 33-6 in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State has won 11 straight Duals against the Tar Heels.

The NC State Men’s Tennis team defeated UNC 4-0, winning against their rival in back-to-back years.

The Wolfpack Women’s Tennis team has defeated the Tar Heels 4-3 on two occasions thus far this season, and will face their rival again today.

The Cross Country teams didn’t have individual meets against UNC, but the Women obviously beat them, because they won the ACC Championship. The Men didn’t, finishing 8th in the Conference, with the Tar Heels finishing 1st.

The only other NC State athletic team that didn’t taste victory against UNC this year was the Women’s Soccer team, losing 0-4 in Raleigh.

Of course, each of these NC State athletic teams has much higher goals than just beating their rival, but there’s no denying how sweet it is to beat the Tar Heels.

Louisville Transfer Guard Mike James is Currently Visiting NC State

Published

on

Louisville Transfer Guard Mike James (6’5″/200) is on a visit to NC State currently, according to a source.

Indiana State Transfer Ryan Conwell was on campus last week, but he just committed to Xavier.

From what I hear, the staff preferred James over Connell anyway. A plus with James is he has 2 years of eligibility, whereas Conwell has 1.

News broke about James entering the Transfer Portal back on March 25th, and NC State was quick to reach out. Kevin Keatts and his staff recruited the former 4-star prospect out of high school heavily, but he ultimately chose the Cardinals.

Rivals ranked James as the #71 overall player in the 2021 recruiting class, and ESPN ranked him as the #7 prospect in the state of Florida.

After redshirting his first year in Louisville due to torn achilles, James has been a starter for the Cardinals the past two years. This year, he averaged 12.6 points and 5 rebounds.

For a more extensive look at James’ game, click here.

Rivals ranks James as the #77 overall player in the Transfer Portal.

Louisville Transfer Guard Mike James is a Priority for NC State

Louisville Transfer Guard Mike James (6’5″/200) is a priority for NC State, according to a source.

News broke about James entering the Transfer Portal back on March 25th, and NC State was quick to reach out. Kevin Keatts and his staff recruited the former 4-star prospect out of high school heavily, but he ultimately chose the Cardinals.

After redshirting his first year in Louisville due to torn achilles, James has been a starter for the Cardinals the past two years.

This past year, James averaged 12.6 points per game (3rd on the team) and 5 rebounds. He’s extremely physical and aggressive, taking 47% of his field goal attempts at the rim (making 46%). As a result, he draws a lot of fouls, ranking 10th in the ACC in Fouls Drawn, and 4th in Free Throw Rate. James made opponents pay this year when they put him on the line, making 81.8% from the charity stripe, which ranked 15th in the ACC.

James shot the ball better as a Redshirt Freshman, than he did this past season. His Effective Field Goal Percentage in 2022-23 was 55.8%, which ranked 19th in the ACC, and his True Shooting Percentage of 59.6% ranked 14th.

He does have the ability to knock down a three, making 34.8% for his career.

NC State already hosted Indiana State Transfer Guard Ryan Conwell last week, and while the Wolfpack coaches like both players, from what I’m hearing, James would be their preference.

NC State hasn’t had James in for a visit, but that could happen soon.

James has 2 years of eligibility remaining.
