“It’s good to be 1-0. It was fun to watch a lot of things tonight. We didn’t turn the ball over, which was one of our keys to victory. I thought we ran the ball hard and very efficient. Throwing the ball, Jacoby was 21 of 23 with two touchdowns. We did some good things distributing the football. He made some good decisions. I’m proud of our offense for what they did in 3rd-and-short and 4th-and-short today. We knew they were an uptempo team, and the best way to beat those teams is to have long drives, score touchdowns and keep them off the field. Our time of possession was 41 minutes to their 18. We played a lot of offensive football in that game. I’m proud of our offensive linemen, tight ends, receivers for making that happen. Really happy about the crowd, with the rain and the lightning at the beginning, for them to stick it out, sell it out, and stay, and be what they were tonight. Thank you. The players thank you. We hope we can continue to get that. It makes a huge difference. We had some great recruits here tonight, who I know loved seeing that. Our players love seeing you in the stands, so thank you. Defensively, disappointed at the end of the 1st half. I challenged those guys in the locker room. We forced two turnovers in the second half. Dra had a big play that sparked their momentum. A big hit with a fumble recovery on a blitz. Mike Stevens had a pass breakup and an interception. I’m so happy for him. A lot of good things. Reggie Gallaspy got his first reps in there. Jalan McClendon got his first reps out there. We had a Senior Tight End catch his first touchdown and get his first catch in Benson Browne. So happy for him. Got to play a lot of people, so that was a very valuable 4th quarter for a lot of young guys. Now Nyheim (Hines) won’t be nervous next week. Reggie (Gallaspy) won’t be nervous next week. Darian (Roseboro) won’t be nervous, and I think you’ll start to see some growth, which is important for those young players to get that first game under their belt. Jaylen Samuels continues to make a lot of plays when he touches the football. He averaged 9 yards a carry again.”
“Matt Dayes had 126 yards, with a 5 yard average, made people miss, took care of the ball. He ran like we thought he’d run to be honest with you. He was like that all through camp. He was really excited about his role tonight. It showed. His practice on Tuesday was unbelievable, how hard he went. I texted him that night and said ‘You practice like that and no one is going to touch you in the game.’ He said ‘That’s what I’m trying to do.’ And I said ‘You’re going to do it.’ Because of how he practiced.
“Jumichael Ramos was like that…because of how he practiced. He practiced really well all week. He had a great game for him. He had 3 catches: the opening catch of the game, a catch in tight coverage, and the catch he made in the end zone going up and getting it. It’s the preparation and the belief in the process. With Matt Dayes, Jumichael Ramos, and Jacoby Brissett you’re starting to see that, and I’m so proud of those guys.”
“That’s one of the things you always worry about in the first game. Especially with us, because we do a lot of shifting, trading, and motioning. There’s a lot of formations where not enough people line up on the line. Coach Canada really had the guys ready. I’m really proud of them. That’s what we have talked about. We have to be a really good football team at not beating ourselves. If we’re in the top 3 in the ACC in least penalized, least turnovers, and most takeaways, we’re going to be hard to beat.”
“I’m really proud of Jumichael. A lot of guys have success early, and they don’t handle their success. He didn’t, and then he had failure. A lot of guys don’t know how to handle that, but he handled it by just working. He bought into what Coach McDonald teaches. He practices really hard, and worked hard all summer. I told him all week that he was going to have a great game, and I grabbed him in the locker room and told him ‘I was proud of him, and to keep doing it.’ and he said he would. It’s just maturity. That’s what you want. He’s a third year player. Bra’Lon Cherry made some great plays tonight. He made some guys miss. Jonathan Alston. Those are some third year players, and you want them to act like third year players. I think it’s a great example for some of our young guys to see. How to handle first year success and second year failure, and how to continue to persevere.”
“Dravious Wright is a guy that can spark us. He’s a high energy player. We lost some of those guys. Last year, Art Norman, T.Y. McGill, and Thomas Teal…they were the guys to spark our defense and make a play. We’re searching for that guy, and Dravious is someone that can be that guy for us. He’s got a lot of swagger to him when he plays. He did a good job hitting him in the chest with a good legal hit, knocked the ball out and recovered the fumble. It was a huge play. We scored a touchdown right there. That kind of put the game away in my opinion. It took away their momentum. We’re proud of him for that. We need him to be that kind of guy, and that’s something we expect from him.”
“We’re disappointed (in giving up the big plays). One of them was a run that we miss-fit. I’ll have to see why the safety wasn’t back there to get it down. I know our end and our nickel were gap exchanging on that play, and they didn’t fit it right, and missed the tackle, and we should have had a second level player back there to get it down, and we didn’t. I’m disappointed in the two fades that they caught. Jack (Tocho) ended up having to come out of the game, but I expect him to make those plays. I know he’s really mad at himself right now. We can’t be a defense that gives up big plays. I’m sure if you break the game down, they had 305 yards and I’m sure half of that was on three plays. We can’t do that.”
“Jack’s (Tocho) fine. He just banged his knee. He’ll be fine.”
“Quinton Schooley did cramp. He was really mad at himself, because that was something we talked about. We watched some of those other guys cramp in the games leading up to ours, and talked about how that wouldn’t be us. He’s mad at himself for that. It was humid out there, and he played a lot of snaps. Offensively we had 84 snaps. He was out there quite a it. Our Strength staff has done a great job, the training staff, and the nutrition staff, all three of them work hand-in-hand, making sure the guys are doing the right thing with food and drink and rest. We looked pretty good that way. Matt (Dayes) had to go in once and come back out, but you didn’t see guys laying around grabbing their legs, and that’s good.”
“Pharoah McEver could have played tonight. He just didn’t practice this week, and I didn’t feel like that was the right thing, to put him out there without practicing. He’ll be full speed on Tuesday, and we’ll have him back for the rest of the year. If we could get him through this week healthy, and have him ready for the next 11, I thought it was the smartest thing for him.”
