REPORT: UNC Football is Under Investigation by the College Sports Commission

The University of North Carolina football program is under investigation by the College Sports Commission, the body that handles compliance and enforcement of NCAA and NIL rules, according to reporting by Pablo Torre.

The news landed on the same day the university placed football general manager Mike Lombardi on paid administrative leave, effective immediately. UNC announced the move Monday morning in a short statement from vice chancellor for communications Dean Stoyer. The school said that as is standard with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes cannot discuss the topic further, and the action “has no reflection on the merits.”

Sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that the leave comes from a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC football front-office employee. A pending investigation led to the decision, which was made by university administration rather than head coach Bill Belichick.

Torre reported the College Sports Commission probe as a separate matter from the Lombardi HR issue. No specific details of the investigation have been made public. The CSC oversees revenue-sharing caps, third-party NIL deals, and sport-specific roster limits. One report suggested Lombardi’s actions may be of interest in the CSC matter, though any link remains unconfirmed.

Lombardi, a longtime NFL executive and close Belichick associate, joined the Tar Heels in December 2024 as one of the coach’s first hires. He previously worked with Belichick for the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. At roughly $1.5 million a year, he ranks among the highest-paid general managers in college football and helped land a top-25 recruiting class in the 2026 cycle.

These developments arrive just before Belichick’s second season in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels finished 4-8 in 2025 and open the 2026 season on Aug. 29 against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. Lombardi’s contract runs through January 2028. University policy for employees in his classification usually caps administrative leave at 30 days while an investigation is underway.

UNC has offered no further comment on the personnel matter or the CSC investigation. The two issues add fresh scrutiny to a program that has drawn plenty of attention since Belichick’s arrival.
