Former NC State cornerback David Amerson was waived by the Washington Redskins today. Amerson was drafted by the Redskins in the 2nd round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Washington had high hopes for Amerson after a promising rookie campaign, in which he had 10 pass breakups, seeing action in all 16 games (starting in 8). Last season Amerson started in all 15 of the games that he played in, but he regressed in a big way. ProFootballFocus calculated that Amerson was the worst defensive back in the NFL last season. As a result, Amerson lost his starting job heading into the season, and after failing to log a snap in Sunday’s game, the Redskins waived Amerson to make room for Chris Culliver, who is coming back from suspension.
Amerson earned 1st team All-American honors after his Sophomore season in Raleigh, as well as 1st Team All-ACC honors. As a Junior he was named to the 2nd Team All-ACC. His 18 career interceptions are good for the most in NC State history.
His collegiate career and his rookie season should be enough for another NFL team to pick up him up off of waivers, despite his struggles last season.
Best of luck to a Wolfpack legend!
