Former Wolfpacker Nate McMillan named assistant coach for Team USA

Published

on

Nate McMillan has been out there making NC State proud for years.

McMillan was a part of some pretty great NC State teams. Under the leadership of Jimmy V, Nate helped lead NC State to a first-place ACC regular season tie in 1985, and the Elite Eight in both the 1985 and 1986 NCAA Tournaments.

After being drafted 30th overall by the Sonics in 1986, McMillan logged 19 seasons in Seattle (as a player and a coach), getting the nickname “Mr. Sonic.”

After his career, he coached the Sonics (mostly successfully) from 2000-2005, went to Portland for 7 years before taking his current position as the head coach for the Pacers in 2013.

Last year McMillan took a team that many believed would be in a rebuilding phase, to the playoffs and was rewarded with a multi-year deal.

McMillan served as an assistant for Team USA during Coach K’s run with the national team, and now he’s back under Gregg Popovich.

Here is what he had to say about the announcement.

“I’m honored and thrilled to be with USA Basketball and the National Team again,” said McMillan. “My previous experience I figured to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and now I’ve been blessed again. I look forward to working with Coach Popovich and a great group of players.” (NBA.com/Pacers)
