By the Numbers: Offensive Rating Update after NC State’s loss to Texas

Published

on

Let’s take a look at how the NC State players fared on offense against Texas and how it compares to their season average. We’ve charted their increase or decrease in parenthesis..

Jayden Tayl0r – 91 (-3)
Marcus Hill – 124 (+15)
Michael O’Connell – 58 (-71)
Brandon Huntley Hatfield– 115 (+8)
Ben Middlebrooks – 122 (-4)
Dontrez Styles – 142 (+36)
Breon Pass – 89 (-35)

Thoughts:
This isn’t really telling you much that you don’t know. Taylor played like he’s been playing, not great offensively. Hill jumped 15% points, which is great, but I’d have assumed it was a larger jump. However, thinking back, his dominance really came in a late first half spurt with some pretty high-difficulty finishes that really stick out in your brain. He didn’t do much in the second half, so I guess +15 makes sense.

Hatfield was about normal, while Mike O’Connell was oh-so bad. a 71-point drop for him in this one. Styles was the biggest gainer with a 36 point increase. Pass dropped down but in low usage, which makes sense. Hew as at 124 prior to this game, and I’d assume he settles in at around 105.

I think the big takeaways are that Hill and Styles are stepping up as potential offensive weapons. Mike O’Connell needs to focus in on playing his role and not get too into making plays, and I have no doubt he will. And lastly, I think we need to have a little discussion about Jayden Taylor. His usage numbers have been to the point where it seems he’s our #1 option, but his output is near worst on the team amongst guys that are getting big minutes. At some point he either needs to get a lot more selective on his shot attempts, or give up some minutes to someone who is more efficient. The problem with all of that is that he’s probably your best on-ball defender.
