NC State’s Player-By-Player Season +/- Rankings

Published

on

Some people really put a lot of weight on the +/- stats and some don’t. Whether you like them or not, they are always pretty interesting to me. The +/- stat basically counts how much your team won or lost by when you were on the court. It’s definitely a muddy stat, but taken over the course of an entire season, you can start to tell the guys who are having a positive impact on the team when they’re in, and the guys who aren’t.

With that said, here is the tally from opening night to Saturday’s win over Florida State. We will continue to update this ranking throughout the season.

Ben Middlebrooks: +75
Marcus Hill: +68
Mike O’Connell: +65
Jayden Taylor: +64
Dontrez Styles: +39
Breon Pass: +36
Dennis Parker Jr: +22
Trey Parker: 13
Brandon Huntley-Hatfield: -1

Takeaways:
– NC State is better when Ben Middlebrooks is on the court. He’s only averaging 9 points and 4 rebounds per game, but the fact that NC State is +75 when he is on the floor tells you that it’s not just about stats for Ben. He’s had multiple games of +20 and above, which is pretty amazing for a guy we thought was going to be a backup center for this team.

– On the flip side, it’s crazy to see that even with all of NC State’s early season blow out wins, Brandon Huntley-Hatfield is still in the negatives. In fact, he’s the only guy in the negatives on this team. This has to change. BHH is way too talented of a player to be struggling like this.

– Marcus Hill, Jayden Taylor, and MOC are all hovering around the same number and they all do different things. Taylor has struggled on offense, but you can see that he’s helping the team on defense and in transition. Meanwhile, O’Connell would likely be a lot higher if it weren’t for the Texas game where he just had an awful night. Meanwhile, Hill is really trending up. His scoring is starting to get more consistent while his defense hasn’t been too shabby either.

– Styles is only at +39, mostly because he really had some bad games in San Diego. Since then he’s been on a roll. He was the highest-rated guy in the Texas game at +10 and was +8 vs. FSU.
