Alec Lower hosted Joe Giglio on his podcast (Lotcast) recently, and they talked all things NC State Football. Giglio is the co-host of the podcast ‘Ovies & Giglio’, and was formerly with WRALSportsFan and the News & Observer. As a longtime beat writer for NC State, Giglio is extremely knowledgeable, and his sources are plentiful.

At the beginning of the podcast, Giglio shared that he believes this will be Dave Doeren’s last season as the head coach at NC State. He spoke to the rumors that Wolfpack Athletic Director Boo Corrigan talked Doeren out of retirement at the end of last season, validating them to be true.

Check out what he had to say:

I really believe this will be his last year. I saw one of your online questions to Alex Post was about ‘Does he really think Dave had to be talked out of retirement last year?’ I really do, and I really do know…yes. I don’t know if it was Boo (Corrigan) who had to talk him out, but I do know there was a conversation that was had before he talked to Boo, and I think if you go back and listen to the interview we did with Dave down in Charlotte before the season started, it’s year 13, and I remember calling one of his former comms guys and saying ‘I just had our best interview with Dave in 13 years.’ I thought he was super honest. I thought he was very clear-eyed, to use a football term if you will. Made for TV. I thought he was a man who knew who he was, and where he wanted to go. It’s funny. I saw Joe Scelfo on Wednesday night in Greenville. We talked a little bit about Dave. We talked about those opportunities, and some of those unbelievable games in 2016. 2017 to me was Dave’s window. That was his chance. That was his best team. Clemson ended up winning the league that year with Kelly Bryant at Quarterback. There were some painful losses. That Clemson game that night. What an incredible atmosphere. To me that was his best team, his best chance to win the league. You kind of have to get those early in your tenure for everyone else to believe. I’m a big believer in that, and I think Herb Sendek kind of failed at that as well.

On yesterday’s ‘Ovies & Giglio’ podcast, Giglio had this to say:

“The issue is you owe him $12 million dollars. If you’re Trace Armstrong, who is Dave Doeren’s agent, you’re not leaving NC State without those $12 million dollars. Right. Even if Dave’s like ‘Nah, man, I want to retire,’ he’d be like ‘Listen, Dave, buddy, I love you, I mean it, but we’ve got one more check to cash.’ That’s not to diminish what I think has been Dave Doeren’s mindset this whole year. I really thought this was it for him. I know he tried to get out last year, or at least had thoughts, but I have to tell you, once you think it’s over, it’s over. Here’s what I would propose if I was NC State. If I was Boo Corrigan, I would sit down with Trace Armstrong, and I would work out a settlement. I would workout a buyout. ‘Hey we owe you 12, but we know you want to be done anyway, so what if we paid you 6?’ He comes back with ‘Make it 8.’ You’re on your way. Save yourself whatever you can save. If you can save #3 million. Awesome. If you can’t, you can’t. That’s just life. But they need to come to an arrangement that says this is what we’re doing. Dave wanted it to be over. It is over. Let’s show him respect for the last 4 games of the season. Come to the Georgia Tech game. Come to the Florida State game. And yes, come to that Carolina game on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but leave all the other stuff, leave all the toxic anger and stuff…leave that at home. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose the games, just have a little bit of dignity and self-respect here as you close this thing out after 13 years.”
