NC State sure did make the right move when they cut ties with former QB MJ Morris.

MJ Morris arrived at NC State as a highly touted four-star recruit from Carrollton High School in Georgia, choosing the Wolfpack over offers from powerhouse programs like Alabama, LSU, and Georgia. In his true freshman season of 2022, Morris stepped up after an injury to starter Devin Leary, appearing in five games and throwing for 719 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. The following year, he started four games mid-season after Brennan Armstrong’s struggles, going 3-1 as a starter with 719 yards, seven scores, and five picks before opting to redshirt and preserve eligibility. His decision to enter the transfer portal on November 30, 2023, marked the end of a promising but inconsistent tenure in Raleigh, where he totaled 1,367 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and six interceptions across two seasons.

After leaving NC State, Morris committed to Maryland on December 13, 2023, where he served primarily as a backup quarterback during the 2024 season, seeing limited action behind the starter. He entered the portal again in December 2024 and transferred to Coastal Carolina ahead of the 2025 campaign, appearing in just four games as a reserve. In that brief stint with the Chanticleers, Morris completed 35 of 60 passes for 304 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions, struggling to secure a starting role. Now, as a fifth-year graduate transfer, he’s set to join Texas for the 2026 season.

Now, I could be wrong, but Texas is probably looking at Morris as a #2 or #3 QB to start the 2026 season, but if Morris wants to make it to the next level, he’s going to need a high-profile opportunity. Texas could provide that if injuries or poor QB play rear their head.

Looking back, NC State’s decision to move on from MJ Morris has proven to be a masterstroke for the Wolfpack program. It paved the way for Grayson McCall’s arrival in 2024, and when McCall suffered a season-ending injury, true freshman CJ Bailey emerged as a star, starting nine games with 2,413 yards and 17 touchdowns. Bailey’s sophomore year in 2025 was even more impressive, with 3,105 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and six rushing scores, culminating in a dominant 31-7 Gasparilla Bowl victory over Memphis where he accounted for three touchdowns. With Bailey returning for 2026 and providing much-needed stability at the position, the Pack has built a foundation for sustained success, turning what could have been a quarterback carousel into a bright future in Raleigh.

Funny how things work out, isn’t it?
