The NC State baseball team split a doubleheader with Princeton on Saturday at the Doak, falling 1-0 in the second game after dominating the opener 16-1. The loss dropped the No. 17 Wolfpack to 5-1 overall on the young season.

In the final game of the non-conference weekend series, the contest turned into a classic pitcher’s duel, with both teams combining for just six hits. The game’s only run came in the top of the sixth inning when Princeton’s Isaac Lamson launched a solo home run to deep left field off starter Cooper Consiglio, breaking a scoreless tie on a 2-2 count.

Consiglio (0-1) took the tough-luck defeat despite a strong outing. The left-hander went 5.0 innings, surrendering just two hits and one earned run while issuing one walk and striking out six across 74 pitches. Relievers Ryder Garino (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K) and Truitt Manuel (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K) kept the Tigers off the scoreboard the rest of the way, but the early damage held up.

The Wolfpack offense struggled to generate much against Princeton pitching, managing only three hits in 30 at-bats while striking out 12 times and leaving seven runners on base. Ty Head led the way with a 2-for-4 effort, including a double, while Chris McHugh added a single. The team committed one error in the field.

Head coach Elliott Avent’s squad had earlier secured a convincing win in game one of the doubleheader, exploding for 16 runs on 16 hits—including a three-run homer from Head—to give Avent his 1300th career victory and push the team’s winning streak to five before the setback.

NC State will look to rebound and continue its strong start when it hosts Richmond on Tuesday, February 24, at Doak Field. First pitch is set for 3 pm and streams on ACC Network Extra.
