According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello, Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz has withdrawn his name from consideration for the open head coaching job at NC State.

Initially, Schertz was considered the top option on NC State’s wish list, with Tennessee assistant coach Justin Gainey slotted right behind him.

With Schertz now off the table, it appears Gainey has moved up to the Wolfpack’s top priority. Currently, Gainey is on the sideline with the No. 6-seeded Volunteers in Chicago as they face the No. 1 seed Michigan in the Elite Eight. While NC State would undoubtedly prefer to hire a coach as soon as possible, a Tennessee upset of the Wolverines today could delay the process significantly.

Don’t forget, Boo Corrigan and his staff also interviewed Furman head coach Bob Richey yesterday, along with Schertz and Gainey. It was a busy day of travel and interviews for Corrigan.
