Tennessee sports radio believes NC State could be a landing spot for Vols guard Bishop Boswell

Tony Basilio, a long-time sports analyst from Knoxville, just gave this update on Tennessee guard Bishop Boswell.

“Will Boswell Accept a New Role? If he returns, he’d play maybe 15 minutes per game next year. I don’t think UT pays him starter money but are open to having him back. Will Boswell, who played more than 24 minutes per night, accept a 40 percent reduction in playing time. Evans will be ahead of him as will Lundblade plus the Vols are adding another wing that we wrote about above. I wouldn’t be surprised if Boswell ends up at NC State when it’s all said and done. Then again, it’s all up in the air.”

Boswell was the first guy we covered in our “Potential Portal Targets” piece yesterday, and we believe the chances are increasingly likely that this happens. Buzz around Tennessee is that they’re going to spend big on guards, leaving Boswell’s role uncertain.

Boswell is a North Carolina native (Charlotte) who averaged 6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3 assists last season in just 26 minutes per game. He shot 38.5% from 3 and 43% from the field. His calling card, however, is his defense.

And Gainey thinks very highly of him.

The question remains as to where he’d slot in. Tennessee did use him at PG at times last season, and he was recruited out of HS as a PG/Combo, but it will depend on Gainey’s system and how he wants to construct his roster. The Vols were known for having smaller havoc creators at the point, but I could see a world with the Pack plays bigger, and Boswell expands his role and takes on lead guard duties.

The one thing we don’t have a question about is his defense. The guy is an absolute dog, who will lock down any elite scorer you throw at him. Here is Iowa State’s leading scorer Milan Momcilovic singing his praises after getting shut down.

It’s likely that the first dominoes to fall will be Tennesee players that want to follow Gainey. Boswell is the most likely at this point, but there are a few others who we’re tracking under the radar, including 6’11 forward JP Estrella.

Here are Boswell’s highlights…
