Contract Comparison: Digging Into the Differences Between Gainey’s and Wade’s Contracts

In what has been a wild turn of events, NC State has now had a new coach in each of the past two seasons. In March 2025, the Wolfpack hired Will Wade on a six-year deal. Roughly one year later, Justin Gainey was named the new head coach on a five-year contract. We wanted to take a look at how these deals were structured and what the biggest differences were. Both agreements were obtained through public records requests.

Contract Length and Total Guaranteed Money

• Will Wade (2025): 6 years (through the 2030-31 season). Total base salary: $17.25 million.
• Justin Gainey (2026): 5 years. Total base salary: $12.75 million.

Wade’s deal is longer and carries roughly $4.5 million more in guaranteed money. On an average-annual-value basis, Wade’s contract pays about $2.875 million per year, while Gainey’s averages $2.55 million.

Annual Base Salary Progression

Both contracts include built-in raises, but on a different scale.

Will Wade

• 2025-26: $2.50 million
• 2026-27: $2.65 million
• 2027-28: $2.80 million
• 2028-29: $2.95 million
• 2029-30: $3.10 million
• 2030-31: $3.25 million

Justin Gainey

• Year 1: $2.35 million
• Year 2: $2.45 million
• Year 3: $2.55 million
• Year 4: $2.65 million
• Year 5: $2.75 million

Gainey’s starting salary is $150,000 lower than Wade’s, and his raises are smaller ($100,000 per year versus Wade’s $150,000). By the final year of each deal, Wade would be making $500,000 more annually than Gainey. This makes sense seeeing as this is Gainey’s first head coaching job and Wade had years of experience.

Performance Incentives and Bonuses

Both coaches can earn substantial additional money through team performance and academic bonuses, but the maximum upside favors Wade.

• Will Wade: Up to $2 million per year in bonuses ($1.7 million competitive + $300,000 academic).
• Justin Gainey: Up to $1.25 million per year ($950,000 competitive + $300,000 academic).

Bonus structure:

Wade’s NCAA Tournament payouts are significantly higher at the lower levels. Gainey’s structure still offers strong rewards for deep tournament runs, but the ceiling is lower.

Both receive identical $300,000 maximum academic bonuses tied to graduation rates and Academic Progress Rate (APR) benchmarks.

Buyouts and Contract Security

Wade’s contract includes explicit buyout language:

• If Wade departed early (which he did), he’d owe NC State a declining buyout: $5 million (before April 1, 2026), which would have dropped to $3M, $2M, and $1M in subsequent years.
• NC State paid a $1 million buyout to McNeese State to hire him.

For Gainey it looks like this

• The buyout (what Gainey would owe NC State if he departs for another job) starts at $5 million if he leaves on or before April 1, 2027.
• It then decreases by $1 million each year:
  • $4M by April 1, 2028
  • $3M by April 1, 2029
  • $2M by April 1, 2030
  • $0 after that (no buyout in the final year).

Two Different Approaches

Will Wade came in as a premium name, and his six-year, $17.25 million contract reflected that. With a higher salary floor, bigger NCAA bonuses, and more years of security, he got a pretty comfortable financial safety net.

Gainey’s deal looks more like a first-year head coach’s deal: five years at $12.75 million total. It’s still solid for the ACC, but it’s built around steady raises and realistic incentives rather than a massive guarantee.

In the end, both contracts are heavily weighted toward performance. A lot of money is tied to how far the team goes in the tournament and how well the players do in the classroom.
