Why did the SF Giants trade former Wolfpacker and two-time Gold Glover Patrick Bailey to the Guardians?

Over the weekend, a trade went down in Major League Baseball that didn’t turn many heads.

Patarick Bailye was sent from the San Francisco Giants to the Cleveland Guardians, for LHP Matt Wilkinson and the #29 pick in the 2026 draft.

For NC State fans, however, this is big news. Patrick Bailey, a former star at NC State was emerging as THE best defensive catchers in the game.

Here is what MLB Network had to say about the deal…

Bailey, despite hitting around .300 in all of his 3 seasons, Bailey has struggled to hit at the major league level. He batted just .222 with 6 homers last year in 452 plate appearances. So how is he still getting at-bats this season?

Well, because he’s quite literally the best defensive catcher in the game. Scratch that. He’s the best defensive PLAYER in the game (according to the numbrers)…

Bailey is an absolute wizard with the globve, and even though many believed catcher who were elite ‘framers’ would be obsolete because of the new ‘challenge rules‘ it hasn’t panned out that way for Bailey.

That’s over 50 balls that were called strikes so far (and not challanged). If you know baseball then you understand how big of an advantage it is to have a guy like Patrick Bailey.

That’s why the Guardians made the move. As for the Giants, their former catcher, Buster Posey, is the head of baseball operations now for the Giants and he was an offnensive minded catcher who hit .336 with 24 HRs in his best season (2012). He was more interested in bring in more offense and a catcher who was more seasoned in running a pitching staff, leaving the defensive analtyics darling, Bailey, as a trade chip.

Bailye started his first game for the Guardians yesterday, going 0-3 with a strikeout.
