Sophomore center fielder Ty Head was one of six NC State baseball players invited to last week’s MLB Draft Combine, and based on the latest draft projections, Wolfpack fans should prepare for the likelihood that his career in Raleigh has come to an end.

Before the combine, Head was widely projected as either a supplemental first-round pick or a second-round selection in the 2026 MLB Draft.

Current MLB Draft Projections

Here’s where the major publications currently rank Head:

ESPN: No. 43 overall prospect
Baseball America: No. 52
Perfect Game: No. 56
MLB Pipeline: No. 58

Those projections place Head squarely in the supplemental first-round to second-round range.

Based on MLB’s slot values:

No. 43 overall pick: $2,333,200
No. 58 overall pick: $1,637,700

It’s worth noting that all of these rankings were released before the MLB Draft Combine.

Head’s performance in Arizona could cause his stock to rise or fall when the publications release their final rankings leading up to the July 11 MLB Draft.

Odds Favor Turning Pro

History suggests that Head is likely headed to professional baseball.

Between 90% and 95% of players selected in the first two rounds ultimately choose to sign professionally rather than return to college.

Even though Head has played only two collegiate seasons, he is draft eligible because he turned 21 years old on May 25.

One of the Nation’s Best Center Fielders

Head recently earned one of the most prestigious defensive honors in college baseball.

The sophomore was named the ABCA National Gold Glove winner in center field after not committing a single error all season.

But Head proved he was much more than an elite defender.

He also earned Second Team All-ACC honors after putting together one of the best offensive seasons on the Wolfpack roster.

2026 Statistics

(Team rank in parentheses)

Batting Average: .291 (5th)
On-Base Percentage: .460 (2nd)
Slugging Percentage: .556 (3rd)
OPS: 1.013 (3rd)
Hits: 55 (5th)
Doubles: 8 (6th)
Home Runs: 14 (1st)
Runs Scored: 64 (1st)
RBI: 48 (T-2nd)
Walks: 57 (1st)
Stolen Bases: 26 (1st)

Record-Setting Patience

Head’s ability to reach base was one of his greatest strengths.

His 57 walks not only led NC State and ranked second in the ACC, but they also rank second in Wolfpack single-season history.

On the basepaths, Head was equally dangerous.

His 26 stolen bases are tied for the fifth-most in a single season by an NC State player.

Final Thoughts

Every indication points toward Ty Head hearing his name called early in the 2026 MLB Draft.

If the current projections hold, it would be surprising to see him return to Raleigh for another season.

While Wolfpack fans would undoubtedly love to watch him patrol center field one more year, Head has positioned himself to become one of the highest-drafted NC State players in recent years.

The next update to his draft stock will come when the major publications release their post-combine rankings ahead of the July 11 draft.
