PI EXCLUSIVE: 4-Star WR Josh Downs Talks NC State Visit

Published

on

4-star 2020 Wide Receiver Josh Downs (5’10″/165) was in Raleigh two weeks ago, and took in the Wolfpack’s 35-21 victory over Virginia. Downs’ father is Gary Downs, who played running back at NC State, and was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft. The stud out of North Gwinnett High School broke down his visit, and the Wolfpack’s recruitment of him.

Thoughts on his visit to NC State…

I was a very good visit. I love the coaches and the game day atmosphere.

On NC State’s recruitment of him…

They have been recruiting me since 9th grade. It’s a strong relationship every time I go there. It’s like the whole staff knows me, so it’s good and they are recruiting hard. I talk to them everyday.

On NC State’s performance vs. the Cavaliers…

They played good.. The offense looked good. They threw the ball a lot, and the defense looked very solid.

What he likes about how the Wolfpack uses their Wide Receivers…

I love how they throw the ball a lot, and use the slot in the offense a lot.

On which schools are recruiting him the hardest…

NC state, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, etc

On any NC State players he has a good bond with…

Kelvin Harmon is my big bro.

On any NC State commits he’s friends with…

Jalen Frazier is a good friend of mine.

Rivals ranks Downs as the #220 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class, the #39 receiver nationally, and the #26 player in the state of Georgia.

Downs not only has a family connection to NC State, but also hails from Georgia, where the Wolfpack has a strong and successful recruiting presence.

He was also watching the game with 4-star Wide Receiver Porter Rooks, who is the #1 player in the state of North Carolina in the 2020 recruiting class.

Downs hinted on Twitter days after their visit that the two standout receivers could be a package deal at the next level.

Downs, as well as Rooks, are two to keep your eye on in 2020.

Published

on

4-Star 2025 Safety Jontae Gilbert (6’1″/180) confirmed with me that he has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for the weekend of September 27-29, and he plans for it to be his last Official Visit.

Back in July of 2022, Gilbert committed to Ohio St., but last July he decommitted from the Buckeyes.

Gilbert also has Official Visits scheduled for UCF, South Carolina and USC.

At one point, Gilbert was a 5-star prospect, but now he is a consensus 4-star prospect, and a consensus Top-275 player. Rivals ranks him as the #70 overall player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, and the #8 player in the state of Georgia.

NC State offered Gilbert in April of last year.

Recently, he has taken unofficial visits to, or been visited by Louisville, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia St., Oregon, Clemson, Texas and South Carolina.

While he doesn’t have an Official Visit set up with Georgia, the Bulldogs are obviously a big player in Gilbert’s recruitment.

Gilbert plays for Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to a source, 2025 3-Star Edge Nik Alston (6’3″/260) has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for June 7-9.

He also has Official Visits scheduled for Washington, Minnesota, Liberty and Tulane. Honestly, some of the dates that I have found overlap at this point, but these were all reported at one time.

This past season, Alston had 37 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries.

When I spoke with Alston in the past, he said NC State would be at the top of his list.
