NC State Football Recruiting Update – June 27, 2019

Final Camp Report:

Camps ended with a tremendous amount of star power. Commit 4* WR Porter Rooks worked out at the last camp with Target 4* QB Aaron McLaughlin (2021 Prospect). Evidently, they both created a powerful connection with each other and things are still trending in a good direction for us to potentially land McLaughlin. This can be seen by the following Twitter post after the camp:

Camp Performance Updates from Week 3 of Camps:

2020 DB Sean Tucker surprised a lot of people with his athleticism and ball skills. Here’s what 24/7 sports had to say:

One of the biggest standouts at the defensive back position was Washington, D.C. native Sean Tucker. The 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback didn’t participate in every drill at the Wolfpack camps, but did clock in at 4.1 seconds on the 20-yard shuttle along with posting a 9-foot-8 broad jump and 35-inch vertical on his first attempts. Shortly after the Dave Doeren Football Camp, Tucker committed to East Carolina as a member of the 2020 class.

2021 4* QB Aaron McLaughlin continues to impress. Here’s what 24/7 sports had to say about him:

He was clearly the top quarterback on hand. McLaughlin, who checked in at 6-foot-4 7/8 and 218 pounds, showed good athleticism with a 4.82-second 40-yard dash and 10-foot broad jump.

But he was even more impressive on the field. Physically, he’s in great shape and can make every throw. McLaughlin showed a smooth, quick delivery. He consistently fit passes into tight windows and also showed great touch on his deep ball. He’s clearly one of the top rising junior quarterbacks in the country and getting him on campus twice in the past three months is huge for the Pack.

2021 3* CB Tymir Brown was also very impressive:

The top prospect at Friday’s camp was 2021 Jacksonville (N.C.) cornerback, Tymir Brown, who checked in at 5-foot-10 1/2 and 164 pounds. In testing, he registered a 4.52-second 40-yard dash, 4.12-second shuttle, 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump and 36.3-inch vertical jump. He was fluid in drills and always jumped to the front of the line to compete. Brown’s strong all-around performance led to an offer from State. The Pack joins Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest among others that have pulled the trigger. He’ll likely be one of State’s top 2021 defensive back targets. And with a need every year for cornerbacks, landing an in-state athlete would be even sweeter for Doeren and his staff.

247

2021 WR Jacob Gill was also impressive:

2021 Raleigh (N.C.) Cardinal Gibbons standout Jacob Gill was the most consistent receiver from start to finish in Thursday’s camp. He ran crisp routes and consistently got separation from defensive backs. Gill then participated in the 7-on-7 event on Friday night and showed off that skillset in a game environment against some of the top 7-on-7 teams in the state. The Wolfpack already has an offer out for Gill, but he further proved why he should be one of the top targets in next year’s class with his ball skills and clean drills. Along with State, Gill holds offers from East Carolina, Louisville and Wake Forest. It’s early, but the Pack’s in great shape with Gill.

The Next Lincolnton Star?

4* DE Darian Roseboro attended Lincolnton HS before coming to State and playing well over four years. The next Lincolnton star and target for State is 2021 4* DE Travali Price. Here’s what 24/7 sports had to say about Price:

Price, who measured 6-3 1/8 and 241 pounds with a 6-9 1/4 wingspan, has a great frame, which will allow him to add a significant amount of weight over the next few years. Price is raw and needs to continue to get stronger, but has a ton of talent. He was quick off the ball, showed good flexibility and active hands. It’s easy to see why he’s so sought-after and he’s definitely a name to know in 2021. His efforts Saturday earned him an offer from the Pack.

Jayland Parker Update:

3* LB Jayland Parker was slated to take an official visit to Raleigh last week, but it never happened. Most analysts have him committing to Colorado when he announces next week.

New Decision Date:

Target 4* CB Joseph Johnson has decided to move his decision date to July 2nd. He has officially visited State, Penn State, and Texas A&M. Recently, his dad was calling out Penn State on Twitter for getting commitments from two secondary players after Johnson’s official visit. Johnson and his family were very complimentary of State’s staff after his official visit to State, he even posted the following collage on Twitter:

Changes to Waiver/Transfer Rule:

The NCAA is considering changing their Waiver/Transfer Rule to make it more difficult for players to obtain waivers and transfers. In my opinion, the current system is very flawed and allows some players to compete immediately and some who are more deserving not to. This could potentially impact recruiting and make it so more colleges are depending on the recruiting process to get players instead of poaching other college rosters for transfers.

Here’s a link to the story from USA Today

Desmond Evans Update:

UNC is up to some shady stuff with its recruitment of 4* DE Desmond Evans. They have offered his HS teammate a scholarship, and most people say that his HS teammate is probably best suited for D2 or D3 football and is definitely not going to contribute at UNC. Either way, Desmond Evans has stated that he will be attending a cookout at South Carolina this summer and will take all five of his official visits and will announce his top 5 schools during his senior season.

Committed Elsewhere:

Target 3* OL Vershon Lee committed to South Carolina. Target 3* TE Sage Ennis committed to Clemson.

Head to Head Recruiting Story:

The News and Observer posted this interesting story about our Head to Head recruiting with our pale blue neighboring institution of remedial learning.

Dead Period…

June 24th through July 24th this year is the proclaimed “Dead Period” for Football Recruiting. During the dead period: “a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.” – This is another way of saying that there will be a lot of social media posts and messages between prospects and coaches in the next month. Therefore, expect for the Alpha Wolf Showcase to occur sometime after July 24th in Raleigh.

ON3 ranks Pavey as the #4 player in the state of Kentucky (Robert A. Taft High/Burlington, KY)

NC State has already made quite the impression. They only offered him on April 24th. Getting an Official Visit scheduled a week after offering a player is a good sign.

When Pavey released his Top-8 back in February, NC State was obviously on the list. It consisted of Miami (OH), Toledo, Boston College, West Virginia, Pitt, Cincinnati, Indiana and Purdue. Wisconsin is also new to the scene, offering Pavey on April 21st.

As a Junior, Pavey had 46 tackles 7.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss.

All 4 recruiting databases rank Young as a Top-200 prospect nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, with ESPN, 247Sports and ON3 ranking him in the Top-35. 247Sports ranks him as the #29 overall player nationally, the #2 Safety and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

4-Star Safety Jontae Gilbert Has Locked in an Official Visit to NC State

Published

on

4-Star 2025 Safety Jontae Gilbert (6’1″/180) confirmed with me that he has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for the weekend of September 27-29, and he plans for it to be his last Official Visit.

Back in July of 2022, Gilbert committed to Ohio St., but last July he decommitted from the Buckeyes.

Gilbert also has Official Visits scheduled for UCF, South Carolina and USC.

At one point, Gilbert was a 5-star prospect, but now he is a consensus 4-star prospect, and a consensus Top-275 player. Rivals ranks him as the #70 overall player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, and the #8 player in the state of Georgia.

NC State offered Gilbert in April of last year.

Recently, he has taken unofficial visits to, or been visited by Louisville, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia St., Oregon, Clemson, Texas and South Carolina.

While he doesn’t have an Official Visit set up with Georgia, the Bulldogs are obviously a big player in Gilbert’s recruitment.

Gilbert plays for Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
