Let’s be honest. We all hate the new ACC scheduling situaiton where it’s possible we only play Duke or UNC once per season. Most fans also aren’t in love with the new NIL era either, but in a strange stroke of irony, the NIL era’s pressure on funding is making schools get creative.

News broke today that NC State men’s basketball is finalizing a neutral-site matchup against their arch nemesis Tar Heels, inside the Greensboro Coliseum this December.

This will mark the first non-conference meeting between the two programs since the 1977-78 season, giving Wolfpack fans a second crack at the Holes outside of the ACC slate. While the conference schedule already has NC State traveling to Chapel Hill, this Greensboro contest provides a second matchup, which NC State fans certaily will appreciate.

Sources indicate the game is tentatively scheduled for December 15, right after the ACC/SEC Challenge. Contract details are still being finalized, including a potential title sponsor for the event, but momentum has been building for some time. In fact, we hinted at it on June 15th in our intel piece titled “BASKETBALL UPDATE: Edmead as advertised, Jurkovic has a chance to start, schedule addition and another big on the way?

Here’s what we had to say…

Big addition to the schedule coming?

I think this one is all but set, but we don’t want to spill the beans before the ink is dry. We’ve heard there’s an addition to the schedule that’ll likely make the fan base pretty happy. Neutral location. We’ll share the details when the timing is right, but just wanted to give you a heads up that there is something fun in the works.

We were told about this game 10 days ago, but we were told they’d rather wait to get details finalized before the news broke. So we honored that request. But now that it’s out there, we’ll jump in as well.

Old rivalry + new faces = Revenue Generator

This upcoming season should be fun. Both programs will roll out first-year head coaches when they meet. NC State’s own Justin Gainey, a former Wolfpack point guard, taking the helm after Will Wade’s snake-like departure, while UNC welcomes veteran NBA champion coach Michael Malone, a coach they didn’t want, but now they have to act like they’re excited about.

Say what you want, but this game is a no-brainer for both schools. New coaches, old rivalry, neutral site at an arena that holds 22k. That’s big money.

Fun Stat: This will be the first time since the 1946-47 season that two new head coaches square off in this series.

We’ll let you know when this is all fully finalized, but it seems to be good to go.

For those who haven’t been to Greensboro in a long time and are bummed about the game being held there, it’s a lot better than it used to be. Lots more fun bars and cool restaurants. So get ready to book your tickets. We’ll let you know when they go on sale.
