This really shouldn’t be breaking news to anyone, however if you have not been keeping track then Trea Turner’s name in this headline might surprise you.

Turner was the ‘player to be named later’ in the deal that sent Wil Myers from the Rays to the Padres, but he only just was drafted and signed on to play with the Padres on June 14th, 2014. Since he was just drafted and signed, he needed to wait a full year before being officially dealt to another team. Today marks one year.

Here is the rest of that deal:

  • OF Steven Souza (from Nationals)
  • C Rene Rivera (from Padres)
  • RHP Burch Smith (from Padres)
  • 1B Jake Bauers (from Padres)
  • RHP Travis Ott (from Nationals)
  • RHP Joe Ross (from Padres)

What’s funny about this deal is that Turner might end up being the best of entire group. Myers has potential to be a big time bat, but has had injury woes and isn’t showing the power he showed in the minors. Meanwhile, Souza is still young but he’s likely going to continue to be a batting average risk for the Rays. With the rest of the guys basically throw-ins, it’s Turner whose .322 average, 11 steals and 35 RBIs seem to garner the most attention. Turner plays a premium positions (SS) and with the Nationals likely to let current SS Ian Desmond’s contract expire, the job could be Trea’s in 2016.
