NC State Wrestling Stays at #9, Individual Rankings After Week 1

The NC State Men’s Wrestling team stayed put at #9 in the NWCA Coaches Poll after Week 1.

The Wolfpack will face off against #15 Cornell this weekend on the road. Cornell moved up 3 spots in this weeks poll.

Here’s a look at where NC State’s individual wrestlers rank in InterMat’s rankings after Week 1.

  • Redshirt Freshman Jakob Camacho (125) fell 2 spots to #15.
  • Redshirt Freshman Jarrett Trombley (133) went from being unranked, to #14.
  • Redshirt Junior Thomas Bullard (165) fell 3 spots to #14.
  • Redshirt Junior Daniel Bullard (174) fell 3 spots to #17.
  • Redshirt Freshman Trent Hidlay (184) went from being unranked, to #12.

#6 NC State Wrestling Beats Appalachian State 24-12 on the Road

The 6th ranked NC State Wrestling team headed up to the mountains last night, beating Appalachian State 24-12 on the road, winning 7 of their 10 matches. The Wolfpack is now 7-0 on the year in duals.

Notes

  • #4 Redshirt Junior Nick Reenan (197) wrestled his first match of the year. He was about to start the season 0-1, before picking up a takedown with 6 seconds left, securing a 4-3 victory.
  • The lone ranked matchup of the night was #2 Redshirt Junior Hayden Hidlay vs. #20 Matt Zovistoski at 157 pounds. Despite the number beside Zovistoski’s name, it wasn’t much of a competition for Hidlay, picking up a 16-3 major decision.
  • #2 Redshirt Freshman Trent Hidlay (184) and Jakob Camacho (125) were the other two Wolfpack wrestlers to pick up bonus points, both winning by major decision.
  • Redshirt Freshman Jarrett Trombley didn’t wrestle at 133 pounds like usual, and his replacement Redshirt Junior Tommy Cox lost by tech fall in the final match of the night.
  • Both of App State’s ranked wrestlers won in matches they were expected to win.
    • #19 Heavyweight Cary Miller beat Sophomore Colin Lawler by major decision 13-3. NC State’s regular heavyweight Deonte Wilson didn’t wrestle.
    • #20 Jonathan Miller beat Redshirt Sophomore A.J. Leitten 5-0 in the 149 pound match.

The Wolfpack have a nice long break before their next action, starting off the new year at the Southern Scuffle on January 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

NC State Wrestling Stays Put at #6 After Cliff Keen Invitational, Individual Rankings Updated

The NC State Wrestling team placed 8th at the Cliff Keen Invitational this past weekend, managing to stay put at #6 nationally in the NWCA Coaches Poll.

Redshirt Junior Hayden Hidlay (157) and Redshirt Freshman Trent Hidlay (184) finished 2nd at the Cliff Keen Invitational, and Redshirt Junior Thomas Bullard (165) finished 3rd, while Redshirt Junior Tariq Wilson finished 7th.

Here’s a look at the updated individual rankings via InterMat.

Redshirt Freshman Jakob Camacho (125) fell out of the rankings, after being ranked 15th last week.
Redshirt Freshman Jarrett Trombley (133) fell out of the rankings, after being ranked 13th last week.
Redshirt Junior Tariq Wilson (141) fell back 1 spot to #13.
Redshirt Junior Hayden Hidlay (157) fell back 1 spot to #2.
Redshirt Junior Thomas Bullard (165) moved up 5 spots to #8.
Redshirt Junior Daniel Bullard (174) fell back 4 spots to #17.
Redshirt Freshman Trent Hidlay (184) moved up 2 spots to #2.
Redshirt Junior Nick Reenan (197) moved up 1 spot to #4 (still hasn’t wrestled all year).

3 NC State Wrestlers Reach Podium in Cliff Keen Invitational

Three NC State Wrestlers made the podium at the 2019 Cliff Keen Invitational. Redshirt Junior #1 Hayden Hidlay (157) and Redshirt Freshman #4 Trent Hidlay (184) placed 2nd, and Redshirt Junior #13 Thomas Bullard (165) finished 3rd.

#1 Hayden Hidlay beat #8 Kendall Coleman of Purdue 8-0 in the Semifinals, but then lost to #2 Ryan Deakin of Northwestern 6-2 in the finals.

#4 Trent Hidlay beat #3 Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa 8-4 in the Semifinals, marking his 3rd Top-5 victory of the year. Unfortunately, he ran into #1 #1 Zahid Valencia of Arizona State in the finals, losing 12-4 to the 2-time National Champion.

#13 Thomas Bullard beat Dazjon Casto of The Citadel 3-0 to start off the Consolation rounds, and then 18-6 major decision over #8 Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State to advance to the 3rd/4th match. Bullard then pinned #12 Ethan Smith of Ohio State to claim 3rd place.

While he didn’t make the podium, Redshirt Junior #12 Tariq Wilson finished 7th. Wilson started off the day with a 4-2 win over Anthony Sparacio of Binghamton, but then went on to lose to Northern Iowa’s Blockhus 6-4, booting him to the 7th/8th match. Wilson claimed 7th place in dramatic fashion, beating #18 Mitch Moore of  Virginia Tech in the final 3 seconds, with a takedown and two swipes, winning 5-3.

The Wolfpack will hit the road on Friday for a dual against Appalachian State.

NC State’s Hidlay Brothers Advance to the Semi-Finals of Cliff Keen Invitational

NC State’s 6th ranked Wrestling team is participating in the Cliff Keen Invitational this weekend, and the Hidlay brothers both advanced to the semifinals last night.

#1 Redshirt Junior Hayden Hidlay (157) pinned Jerry Rubio of Utah Valley in 49 seconds, and then beat Keaton Geerts of Northern Iowa 15-0 in the 2nd period due to tech fall. He then beat Peyton Robb of Nebraska 3-2 in the Quarterfinals. He will face #8 Kendall Coleman of Purdue in the Semifinals.

#4 Redshirt Freshman Trent Hidlay (184) beat Trent Tracy of Cal Poly 12-4, and then beat Tate Samuelson of Wyoming  4-1. Hidlay beat another ranked opponent in the Quarterfinals, beating #19 Owen Webster 7-4 to advance. He will face #3 Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa in the Semifinals.

Three other Wolfpack wrestlers will have a chance to finish on the podium as well.

#12 Redshirt Junior Tariq Wilson (141) beat Nate Hagan of Edinboro 9-3 in the opening round, and Vinny Vespa of of Hofstra 11-1 in the 2nd round. Unfortunately, Wilson was pinned by #6 Chad Red of Nebraska in the 1st. Wilson will face Anthony Sparacio of Binghamton.

#13 Redshirt Freshman Jarrett Trombley (133) beat Minnesota’s Brent Jones 5-0 in the first round, and pinned Jack Skudlarczyk of Northern Iowa in the second. He unfortunately was taken down with one second left to Ohio State’s Dylan Koontz, losing 5-4. He will face Mosha Schwartz of Northern Colorado.

#13 Redshirt Junior Thomas Bullard (165) had two shutouts in the first two rounds, destroying Jordan Robison of Northern Colorado 16-0 in the 1st, and beating Austin Yant of Northern Iowa 8-0. He went on to lose a close one to #12 Ethan Smith of Ohio State, 4-3 in the Quarterfinals. He will face Dazjon Casto of The Citadel next.

 

Here’s a look at how the other 5 NC State wrestlers who have been eliminated.

#15 Redshirt Freshman Jakob Camacho (125) fell to Jack Medley of Michigan 6-5 in the 2nd round. He then beat Dominic LaJoie of Cornell 12-3 in the Consolation rounds, before falling to #16 Jacob Schwarm of Northern Iowa.

Redshirt Sophomore A.J. Leitten (149) lost to #8 Brock Zacherl of Clarion in the 2nd round, and then beat Cornell’s Hunter Richard 8-6 in Consolation, before falling to Minnesota’s Joshua Maruca 8-4.

#13 Redshirt Junior Daniel Bullard (174) was pinned by Andrew McNally of Kent State, despite holding a dominant lead prior to the pin. He then went on to beat Joe Accousti of Sacred Heart 5-0, before losing to Minnesota’s #9 Devin Skatzka 8-2.

Sophomore Tyrie Houghton lost to Edinboro’s Dylan Reynolds 6-3 in the first round, and advanced by Medical Forfeit over Ryan Reyes of Fresno State in the 2nd Consolation round, before losing Jacob Seely of Northern Colorado 6-4.

Sophomore Heavyweight Deonte Wilson was pinned by Kent State’s Spencer Berthold in the first round, and then beat Tyler Bagoly of Clarion in the 2nd round of Consolation, before falling to #19 Brandon Metz of North Dakota State.
