NC State defeated Coastal Carolina 82-70 tonight in the Lenovo Center, improving to 3-0.
The Chanticleers never led in the contest. The Wolfpack led by as much as 17 points, never leading by the betting spread (18.5) once in the contest.
NC State shot the ball better than Coastal, won the turnover battle, and had more trips to the charity stripe.
The Wolfpack shot 47.4% from the field, while the Chanticleers shot 45.1%. What made this game closer than it should have been is the fact that Coastal hit more threes, and shot 95% from the free throw line. The Chanticleers didn’t shoot well from beyond the arc, but they did hit 5. NC State shot an abysmal 0-10 from three. The Wolfpack did shoot the best they’ve shot all year from the free throw line, making 28 of 35 (80%), with 15 more free throw attempts than Coastal.
For the first time this season, NC State lost the battle of the boards. Coastal had 33 rebounds, compared to the Pack’s 30. The Wolfpack did win the battle of the offensive glass (12-10), and as a result, they had 14 second chance points, compared to Coastal’s 11.
Kevin Keatts loves it when his team forces turnovers, and tonight the Wolfpack turned the Chanticleers over 19 times, which is a season high. They scored 17 points off of those turnovers. He also loves it when his team commits 10 turnovers or less, and they hit that mark by turning it over 10 times. Coastal scored 9 points off of turnovers.
NC State was extremely unselfish through the first two games, with an assist-to-field goal ratio of over 50% in each game. Tonight that wasn’t the case. The Wolfpack had 11 assists on 27 field goals (40.7%).
Senior Guard Jayden Taylor led the Pack in scoring for the 2nd straight game, finishing with 22 points, shooting an efficient 8 of 15 from the field, and a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line. On a down note, he did have 5 turnovers for the 2nd straight game.
Senior Forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield had 13 points, though it came off of his worst shooting performance of the season, shooting 2 of 6. He did a great job of getting to the line, shooting 9 of 10. BHH also led the team with 3 assists, but unfortunately had 4 turnovers.
Freshman Trey Parker had a career night, coming off of the bench to score 13 points (career high), shooting an impressive 6 of 8 from the field. Parker also had 5 boards.
Senior Guard/Forward Dontrez Styles had 10 points (3 of 5), and led the squad with 6 boards and 2 blocks.
Junior Forward Isamel Diouf made his NC State debut, after serving a 2-game suspension. He played 8 minutes, and had 2 points (1-4 FG) and 3 boards.
Senior Forward Ben Middlebrooks had his quietest performance of the season, scoring only 3 points in 9 minutes (both season lows). He was 1 of 6 from the field.
NC State will be in action again next Monday night, hosting Colgate at 7pm on the ACC Network.
