It’s ow official…NC State Defensive Coordinator Tony Gibson is the new Head Coach at Marshall.

The Thundering Herd won the Sun Belt Championship last night against Louisiana Tech, their first conference championship since 2014. Marshall is 10-3 this season.

This is Gibson’s first Head Coaching opportunity. The West Virginia native is going back home.

Not only is it the state of his birth, but he also served as an assistant coach at West Virginia University in different roles over two different stints. His first stint at West Virginia was from 2001-2007, serving as the Defensive Backs Coach (2001-07). After spending time at Michigan, Pitt and Arizona, Gibby went back to West Virginia, and was there for a second stint from 2013-18. In that time, he served as the Safeties Coach (2013), Linebackers Coach (14-18) and Defensive Coordinator (14-18).

Gibson played Defensive Back at Glenville State University (Glenville, WV).

His first coaching job was at Gilmer County High School in West Virginia (1995), and his first college football coaching job was at his alma mater, coaching Defensive Backs at Glenville State (1996).

Gibson got his first Defensive Coordinating opportunity was at West Virginia Tech (1999-00).
