ARTICLE UPDATE AS OF 2/5/25 (10:30PM): According to new communications from NC State University as of tonight,

“The site map used is just one of the options that the consultants proposed for university consideration. The option shown, where the softball field moves behind where Lee Hall currently sits, is not being pursued.

What is being explored currently is the demolition of Lee, Sullivan and Bragaw Residence Halls, as well as Fountain Dining Hall and the West Dunn building, effectively clearing the site to rebuild student housing and dining facilities, increasing both the number of beds and dining capacity on campus.”

The project is in the early stages of planning.”

Our Comment to the Update: The article contains imagery of NC State’s master plan which has been published on NC State’s site since 2023. It also contains the Project Summary (Survey) that was posted on their site 2 months ago stating the scope of the plan to demolish the residence halls and Lee Hall. To our knowledge, NC State saying “The option shown, where the softball field moves behind where Lee Hall currently sits, is not being pursued.” is new and breaking info.

The option initially shown is repeated on pages 9, 11, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 64, 67, 68, 69 of the master plan, without mention or visual of an alternative option. So it’s likely that everyone’s next question is “Then where are they proposing to put the new softball stadium? Will there be one?” We will ask those questions and get an answer for you.

NC State is NC State planning on tearing down Lee, Bragaw, Sullivan Residence Halls, Fountain Dining Hall and the West Dunn building. In their place they will build new student housing and more dining. Both will have more capacity. They will also be building a new softball stadium next door.

The moves NC State are about to make are pretty big and they’re in the news again because documents are again being circulated due to the Advanced Planning stage of the project starting in 2025 (and them getting set for demolition .)

The NC State softball field is currently across the street from Reynolds Coliseum, but according to the master plan, it will soon be moved next to The Doak (NC State’s baseball stadium).

To allow it to fit, NC State will be demolishing some of the popular dorms. Gone will be Lee, Bragaw and Sullivan Residence Halls, the West Dunn building and gone will be Fountain Dining Hall. In their place will be a group of new buildings. With 800,000 sq feet of student housing, 100,000 sq feet of dining, and 25,000 square feet of student life space. Oh, and a new softball field!

Below is the project summary from NC State.

Many NC State fans have been begging for a new baseball stadium, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon. Improvements continue to be made to the Doak, and with the new softball stadium going in over the left field wall, there may be way to combine concourses and include left-field bleachers for baseball. (That’s not in the master plan, but it should be.)

Maybe this is old news to you, but many have been unaware of NC State’s master plan for campus, and with demolition starting in the not-too-distant future, we thought it would be a good time to remind Wolfpack fans of whats going on.

Just note that Advance planning is set to start December of THIS YEAR, and while demolition may be coming in the not-too-distant future, the building phase of this is still a ways out…

Phase 1- Jan 2030
Phase 2- Jan 2032
Phase 3- Jan 2034

What do you think? Do you like the plans or were you hoping for something else?
