The NC State Wolfpack erupted for 5 runs in the second to cruise to a 10-4 victory over the Indiana State Sycamores on Saturday afternoon in Puerto Rico.

The Wolfpack (now 2-0) wasted little time, jumping ahead in the bottom of the first when Dalton Bargo crushed a solo home run to deep right field off Sycamores starter Breylin Suriel.

This was Bargo’s (a Tennessee transfer) second homer in as many games.

NC State then loaded the bases in that second and cashed in three runs without a hit: Drew Lanphere drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Brayden Frasman, Ty Head followed with another free pass to score Andrew Wiggins, then Chris McHugh delivered a run-scoring single to right center, bringing home Wyatt Peifer and giving the Pack a 4-0 lead.

The scoring continued in the third as Luke Nixon reached on a fielder’s choice to score Lanphere, Wiggins ripped an RBI double down the right field line to plate Fraasman, and Lanphere added an RBI single to score Wiggins, pushing the margin to 7-0.

Bot 4 brought more damage: Nixon advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Fraasman’s two-out double down the left field line. McHugh later reached on another fielder’s choice to score Peifer with the 10th and final run – unearned thanks to an Indiana State error.

The Sycamores (0-1) avoided a shutout in the sixth, plating a pair of unearned runs against Sam Harris on sacrifice flies from Caden Miller (scoring Carter Beck) and Nick Sutherlin (scoring Emi Estrella).

Indiana State tacked on two more in the top of the ninth against Aiden Kitchens, who served up a two-run homer to Jorge Cartagena – his blast to left-center also plating Sutherlin from first. But Kitchens steadied to close out the three-inning save.

Fraasman paced the Wolfpack offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. He has now reached base 6 times in NC State’s first 2 games.

Meanwhile, McHugh and Lanphere each drove in two runs, while Bargo, Nixon, Wiggins and Peifer all scored twice in a balanced 12-hit attack. The Pack left 10 on base but capitalized on four Sycamores errors and five walks.

Dudan (1-0) earned the win after 5 innings of shutout ball, striking out two and only allowing 2 hits.

NC State opens the season with back-to-back convincing wins, showcasing the depth that should fuel another strong campaign in the ACC.

The Wolfpack returns to tomorrow vs. Seton Hall in Puerto Rico.
