Why did NC State baseball just cancel their game vs. North Carolina A&T? HINT: It’s not weather related

Usually when a baseball game is cancelled, it’s because the weather didn’t cooperate. That’s not the case here.

NC State Baseball announced that Tuesday’s scheduled midweek home game against North Carolina A&T had been “mutually agreed to be canceled.” The Wolfpack will now turn its attention to the final regular-season series against rival UNC, starting May 14 at Doak Field. No weather issues were cited. No makeup date was announced. Just a quiet, mutual agreement to scratch the game.

Fans and observers immediately drew the same conclusion: this was an RPI move. And assuming that’s true, it makes perfect strategic sense in the cutthroat world of college baseball postseason selection.

What Is RPI and Why Does It Matter So Much Right Now?

The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is the NCAA’s primary mathematical tool for evaluating teams for at-large bids and seeding in the 64-team Division I Baseball Tournament. It’s a weighted formula that considers a team’s winning percentage, its opponents’ winning percentages, and the strength of those opponents’ opponents.

In short, it rewards teams that beat good teams and play tough schedules while punishing bad losses and cupcake wins late in the year.

NC State entered Monday sitting at roughly No. 37 in the RPI after a strong weekend series win over Miami that boosted them 17 spots. At 30-17 overall and .500 in ACC play, the Wolfpack are right on the bubble for an at-large regional berth. Every data point in the final two weeks of the regular season carries massive weight. One bad loss can drop a team 20–40 spots. One “empty” win against a terrible opponent barely moves the needle.

The Opponent: North Carolina A&T (RPI: 281)

North Carolina A&T is 12-34 overall with an RPI ranked of 281 out of 300 Division I teams. That’s firmly Quad 4 territory, the lowest quadrant.

A win against A&T would have done almost nothing to strengthen NC State’s strength of schedule or quadrant record. A loss, on the other hand, would have been a catastrophic black mark that could have erased the recent RPI gains and jeopardized their NCAA hopes.

But again, maybe this wasn’t about RPI, and it was just two teams that didn’t feel like playing each other this week. Good luck convincing anyone of that, but hey, you never know.
