SI Picks NC State 9th in Preseason ACC Men’s Basketball Rankings

Sports Illustrated recently published their 2018-19 ACC Men’s Basketball Preview, and picked NC State 9th in their preseason rankings.

  1. Duke
  2. Virginia
  3. UNC
  4. Florida St.

  9. NC State
  10. Miami
  11. Louisville
  12. Boston College
  13. Wake Forest
  14. Georgia Tech
  15. Pittsburgh

Here’s what SI had to say about the Wolfpack:

9. NC State

The Skinny: The Wolfpack enter their second season under head coach Kevin Keatts with eight new players on their roster. Without the team’s leading scorer and most prolific three-point shooter Allerik Freeman, NC State needed scorers this season. With key players like Braxton Beverly and Markell Johnson in the backcourt and veteran Torin Dorn to fill the four slot, Keatts could pull off a surprisingly strong season if he can get his incoming transfer talent to mesh with last season’s starters.

Scout’s Take: “They’ve got eight new players but some of those kids have played and transferred in and man, they can play. They’ve got talent. They’re going to be tough because of the small ball that they play. They’ll put four guards on the floor and switch and push the tempo. [The ACC] got a taste of what Kevin [Keatts] could do last year and look [at] the talent he’s got at NC State this year.” (SI)

NC State’s Braxton Beverly Fractured His Hand in Practice

Published

on

According to GoPack.com, NC State Sophomore Point Guard Braxton Beverly fractured his hand in practice this past Friday, and is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow.

NC State is blessed with depth at the point guard position, returning Junior Markell Johnson, who led the ACC in assists last year, and Sophomore Missouri transfer Blake Harris, but the loss of Beverly is a significant blow to the Wolfpack’s rotation.

Head coach Kevin Keatts has been hyping up running a lineup including Johnson, Beverly and Harris at some points in the upcoming season. Losing Beverly isn’t just a loss of a floor general. He is NC State’s second best returning three-point shooter (38.5%) behind Markell Johnson (40.9%).

At this point, there is no projection of how long the Wolfpack will be without Beverly in the lineup.

Bryce, who played for Keatts at UNCW, is the headliner of the group, and returnee Torin Dorn is one of the most underrated players in the ACC. (ESPN)
