Vonwolf: Put Some Respect on Keatts’ Name

Published

on

It’s a wild time to be a State men’s basketball fan.

Six weeks ago, the shovels were out and we were trying to determine which plot to bury the 2020-21 team. Since that point, the Pack has gone on a five-game winning streak, and have won six of their last eight. How has this happened? Who is responsible for this turnaround?

I think we all know the answer. It’s time we show some love for Mr. Keatts.

Whether it was after the Duke game or the ludicrous, fake rumors about Penn State, it was interesting to see some folks wonder again if Keatts was the right guy for the job. We even broke down all the things that have gone against him, from recruits heading straight to NBA, lack of love from the selection committee and unfortunate team health issues.

Kevin Keatts is a winner and this recent two-week stretch has shown it.

Win Baby Win

Winning cures all, doesn’t it? The Duke loss was bad and moments of the Pitt win at home, weren’t much better. Those aside, this five-game road winning streak is something else. We’re talking about State doing something it hasn’t done in nearly FIFTY YEARS.

Some people will say, “come on…these teams sucked” but that’s not the case in Vegas’ mind. Out of the five road wins, only Boston College found the Pack favored. That’s right, they thought Wake Forest would win. So not only on the road, but underdogs, and they won them all.

Even with stars going down for the year, COVID delays, mounting pressure, and questions bubbling up from a small sect of fans asking “Is he the right guy?”…Keatts still won’t have a losing record in the ACC. In 11 prior seasons under Gottfried and Lowe, State was below .500 for seven of them.

Freshmen Sensations

Over this road streak, Seabron, Hayes, and Moore have averaged, as a trio, over 32 points per game. That doesn’t include the hustling, rebounding, blocks, assists, and steals (they had a combined TEN versus WF) they’ve put up.

The COVID hiatus hurt the freshman the most. Hayes was on a roll and just couldn’t find that spark for the next month-plus. Seabron and Moore had extended streaks of sub-ten-minute games.

But, baby, look at us now! You have to give credit to Keatts and staff for what they’ve been able to do.

These freshmen are playing with more confidence than I can remember from any freshman in the last ten years (Maybe Purvis and Smith Jr, but they might have been more cocky, than confident). Daniels and Allen go down, yet the old ball coach was able to take what many saw as pieces that simply didn’t fit together at this time, and  put them back to create something better than he had before. What you are watching is one of the best mid-season adjustments we’ve seen from an NC State coach in years.

No I in Team

Every. Single. Game. (mostly) this team has had as much energy off the court as on. Everyone has bought in; whether they’re starters, role players, bench players or injured. That starts with the coach, and that was no small task with the COVID protocols this season.

Every new coach has a grace period of trying to mesh returning players (and transfers) with “his” players. More often than not, it’s a bumpy road with a few poor seasons mixed in there. Keatts, however, has bridged the gap and has done so in the middle of a season. He changed the identity of his team on the fly, slotting in 3 guys who really weren’t getting many minutes early on, and has actually improved his squad. There is only one way that this is even possible. Kevin Keatts’ team is 100% committed to playing for each other and 100% committed to his vision.

Future is Looking Brighter

These last two weeks have been monstrous for Keatts. Not only on the court but in recruiting terms as well. 2021 PG commit Breon Pass went off for 37 to beat a UNC recruit. 2021 SG commit Terquavion Smith is in the State championship game (for the 3rd year in a row) after dropping 27 points and showing up as SportsCenter’s #1 play of the day. Meanwhile, Ernest Ross, down in Florida, is also in the state championship game with his Class 4A squad.

Just look at next season. You lose Beverly and Funderburk from the current roster. Obviously Daniels is gone too, but you have Bates, Allen, Hellems, Hayes, Seabron, Moore. These are the guys who are winning games for you TODAY. You also have two guys in Nick Farrar and Ebenezer Dowuona who will have an offseason to improve and we haven’t even talked about the class of three 4-stars coming in and the likely addition of a grad-transfer this offseason.

Keatts is building something special. He’s been building it since the day he got here. I’m sure COVID or losing 2 of his upper-class starters wasn’t in his plans, but all you can ask from your coach is to adjust and adapt to win. Keatts is doing that right before your eyes.

I think, when you really look at it, it’s time we put a little more respect on Keatts’ name.

Passionate State fan that just wants to win...something...like anything...

Agree wholeheartedly. I think about the coaches we were looking at and the ones we missed and am so glad we got Keatts.

Please don’t omit Gibson from the “offseason to get better” list. Let’s give the guy some love and hope he comes around, even if it takes as long as it did for Hellems.

Bowling Green Transfer Guard Marcus Hill Commits to NC State!

Published

on

Bowling Green Transfer Guard Marcus Hill (6’4″/185) has committed to NC State!

Hill took an Official Visit to NC State this past weekend.

This past season, Hill averaged 20.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for the Falcons. He earned 1st Team All-MAC honors. Even though he was only at Bowling Green one season, he had one of the best seasons in school history, scoring 698 points, which ranks 5th all-time in program history for a single season.

For his first two years of collegiate ball, Hill played for Southern Union State College (JUCO) in Alabama. In 2022-23, Hill earned 3rd Team NJCAA All-American honors, and ranked as the #32 overall Junior College prospect.

247Sports ranks Hill as a 4-Star Transfer Prospect, and the #81 overall player in the Transfer Portal, and the #11 Shooting Guard.

Even though 247Sports and ON3 consider Hill a Shooting Guard, NC State is recruiting him as a Point Guard.

Hill is the 4th player to transfer to NC State this offseason, joining Louisville’s Brandon Huntley-Hatfield & Mike James, and Georgetown’s Dontrez Styles.

With the addition of Hill, NC State now has 1 scholarship remaining for next season.

NC State’s Mohamed Diarra Will Not Return to NC State for Final Season

Published

on

NC State Forward Mohamed Diarra will not be returning to NC State for his final season of eligibility. Rather, he will give 100% of his focus to pursuing his professional career.

Image

Diarra is declaring for the NBA Draft, and will explore that possibility as far as it goes, but the likelihood of him playing professionally in his home country of France are high.

Diarra was a significant player for NC State all season long, averaging 6.3 points and 7.8 rebounds (team high), but his impact in March was tremendous, recording 10+ rebounds in 7 of the Wolfpack’s 10 postseason games, and five of those performances were double-doubles.

Wolfpack fans will always remember the grit and mental toughness that Diarra put on display in the NCAA Tournament, playing game-after-game while fasting for Ramadan.

The Wolfpack’s frontcourt just got a little bit thinner. In the past two weeks, NC State has lost Diarra and Ernest Ross.  Ben Middlebrooks is returning, and Brandon Huntley-Hatfield transferred in from Louisville. Dontrez Styles transferred in from Georgetown, and while he is more of a Small Forward, in certain lineups, he could play the Small 4 position. With all that being said, I fully expect NC State to try to find another post player in the Transfer Portal with Diarra’s exodus now official.

With Diarra not returning in 2024, NC State now has 2 scholarships available for next season.

Louisville Transfer Guard Mike James Commits to NC State!

Louisville Transfer Guard Mike James (6’5″/200) has announced his commitment to NC State!

A post shared by Tipton Edits (@tiptonedits)

This past year, James averaged 12.6 points per game (3rd on the team) and 5 rebounds. He’s extremely physical and aggressive, taking 47% of his field goal attempts at the rim (making 46%). As a result, he draws a lot of fouls, ranking 10th in the ACC in Fouls Drawn, and 4th in Free Throw Rate. James made opponents pay this year when they put him on the line, making 81.8% from the charity stripe, which ranked 15th in the ACC.

James shot the ball better as a Redshirt Freshman, than he did this past season. His Effective Field Goal Percentage in 2022-23 was 55.8%, which ranked 19th in the ACC, and his True Shooting Percentage of 59.6% ranked 14th.

News broke about James entering the Transfer Portal back on March 25th, and NC State was quick to reach out. Kevin Keatts and his staff recruited the former 4-star prospect out of high school heavily, but he ultimately chose the Cardinals.

After redshirting his first year in Louisville due to torn achilles, James has been a starter for the Cardinals the past two years.

He does have the ability to knock down a three, making 34.8% for his career.

James has 2 years of eligibility remaining. With James’ commitment, NC State currently has 1 scholarship available for next season.
