Weekend Roundup: With the Good Comes the Bad

Men’s Golf

State men’s squad started their season off with a solid second place finish at the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham. It truly was a two horse race between State (-24) and eventual winner UNC (-27). Third place, Duke, was 16-strokes behind the Wolfpack, with the remainder of the field much further back. Steinlechner was State’s best finisher at 203 for the weekend, second overall. Women’s golf starts today.

Women’s Soccer

Thursday State women’s soccer DESTROYED Oklahoma behind a 5-0 effort. Goals by Thomas, Elmendorf, Kawagishi and two by Guttenberger (added an assist, as well). Even though shots for the game we’re 9-9, State was able to get eight of those on target with the five goals.

State then faced #11 Penn State on Sunday and gave them all they could handle. Wolfpack outshot Penn State, but allowed a goal in the last minute of play to lose 1-0. State moves to 4-2-2 on the season.

Men’s Soccer

Wolfpack hosted #2 ranked Clemson Friday night in Raleigh. In front of nearly 2,000 at the Dail, State went toe-to-toe, but fell 2-0. Clemson remains undefeated on the year, State drops to 3-2.

Women’s Volleyball

State. Took. Care. Of. Business. Attending the Rutgers Tournament over the weekend, State went undefeated, beating Brown (3-0), host Rutgers (3-2) and NJIT (3-0). The Wolfpack have now gone 5-1 in their last six and hope to keep the upward trend going, as they host Georgia and Arkansas this weekend in the ACC/SEC Challenge at Reynolds.

WOLFPACK ROUND UP: Women’s team advances, Baseball continues to struggle, Dillingham decommits & 2 MBB assistants fired

Published

NC State Women’s team knocks out Longwood 96-68
The #1 seeded Wolfpack took care of business this weekend with a blowout of 16th seeded Longwood. The Pack used a balanced attack, with 4 players in double figures to coast to the victory. Raina Perez led State with 16 points on 7-8 shooting, while Jakia Brown-Turner dropped 15 and added 7 boards. Cunane added 13, while Johnson and Boyd both had 12. The Lady Pack did it on both ends, shooting 50% from the floor, while owning the boards 50-38 and forcing 14 turnovers. Next up is #9 seed Kansas State today at 4 pm.

NC State baseball loses 2 of 3 to FSU. Now sitting at 11-8 on the season.
The Pack 9 started strong, but has hit a few bumps in the road as of late. They are sitting at 11-8 on the season, but they lost both games to #2 ranked Notre Dame and then dropped 2 of 3 to #8 ranked FSU. 3 game sets with GT, Clemson and VT is a good stretch to help them get back on track.

Robert Dillingham, 5 star PG, decommits from NC State
The hits keep on coming for NC State and Kevin Keatts. After a dismal season, fans were looking to next year in hopes to see a revived Wolfpack squad. However, Cam Hayes has opted to transfer, along with Jaylon Gibson, and now 5 star Robert Dillingham reopened his recruitment. Dillingham was a 2023 recruit, but there were thoughts that he may end up reclassifying to the 2022 class. With the departure of Hayes, PG minutes were wide open. Now those minutes fall directly on the shoulders of Breon Pass, a PG who logged less than 9 minutes per game last season.

NC State basketball fires 2 assistants
Mike Summey and Roy Roberson have been let go by NC State Basketball, leaving 2 spots open on their coaching staff. Summey came on board after the 2019-2020 season. He was a NC State grad who had experience as an assistant at Miami, Bowling Green, the Citadel and North Florida.  Meanwhile, Roberson was about to embark on his 5th year at State and before that was a high school coach. With 2 spots now open. it will be interesting to see where NC State looks. The NC State fanbase seems split at the moment. Some want to give Keatts more time, while others want to cut ties and move in a new direction, however, both groups seem to agree that seeing if some new assistants can help patch up some of the holes that have developed over the past few seasons.

WOLFPACK ROUND UP: BJ Hill signs NFL deal, Jaylon Gibson hits portal, Baseball hits rough patch, NC State WBB gets #1 seed & Bo Hines goes political

Published

on

You can’t take breaks in this business, because the news never stops! However, we always take a little break and then slow down after basketball season, and this year was no different. Keeping up with NC State is stressful, writing about losing is boring, and it’s 2022 so mental health breaks seem more acceptable these days. That said, during the hiatus, a lot has gone on. Here is what we missed…

BJ Hill signs $30 million deal with Bengals
Fifth-year DT and former Wolfpacker, BJ Hill, is getting paid. Hill signed a 3 year, $30 million deal with the Bengals. He was a 3rd round pick of the NY Giants who was dealt to Cincinnati last August. Hill played in 16 games, totaling 50 tackles and 5.5 sacks during the regular season and ramped it up in the playoffs, notching 13 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception.

Jaylon Gibson likely leaving NC State, Hits the transfer portal
Gibson, a sophomore big for the Wolfpack, has decided to enter the transfer portal. After a season where he was thrust into a much bigger role than expected (due to the injury of Manny Bates), Gibson averaged 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 14 minutes per game during the season. With Bates potentially coming back, Dowuona locked in as his backup, and shot-blocking freshman Shawn Phillips coming in, Gibson was going to have to fight hard for minutes next season. Thus, he’s decided to see what else is out there. If Bates doesn’t return, then it’s likely Keatts will go after a more seasoned big man in the portal. NC State struggled with their frontcourt play this year, and neither Dowuona or Gibson seems to be the long-term answer if the Pack wants to contend for a top spot in the conference.

NC State baseball starts strong, but hits rough patch
The Pack 9 came out of the gates swinging. Literally. They won their first 8 games of the season, anchored by an unbelievable stretch of power production from freshman Tommy White. Since then, however, the Pack has fallen off a cliff, losing 6 of their last 8 games. They are now 0-2 in the conference after losing both bouts with #3 ranked Notre Dame with a series vs. FSU coming up Friday.

White has been an absolute bright spot for the Pack hitting .394 with 9 homers thus far. As for pitching, sophomore Matt Willadson has looked great. Over 4 starts Willadson has a 3.80 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 21 innings (however he doesn’t have a win yet). Meanwhile, last year’s postseason star Sam Highfill has been up and down, with a 4.79 ERA, 23 strikeouts over 20 innings over 4 starts (and a 1-1 record).

NC State WBB heads into the NCAA Tournament as a 1 seed.
The women took care of business this season, doing everything they had to do. They finished 29-3. They won the ACC regular season. They won the ACC Tournament. They finished out the season on a 10 game winning streak.

Now it’s time to bring home the national title. The Pack ladies open up play on Saturday at 2pm when they take on either Longwood or Mt. St. Mary’s. Here is the bracket.

Former NC State WR Bo Hines gets political
Bo Hines was a budding star WR for NC State in 2014. As a freshman, Hines had 45 receptions for 616 yards and a TD in his first year. Note that the#10 all-time best season by a WR in terms of receiving yards was Chris Coleman with 876 in 1998. As a freshman, Hines was too far off that mark and was only showing signs of improvement as the season wore on.

But we never got to see what Bo Hines could become. He left the program and football altogether after that season, transferring to Yale, hanging up the cleats, and getting into politics. Now Hines is running for an open NC Congress seat. He’s aligned with the GOP and made news just a couple of days ago when he received a controversial endorsement from former president Donald Trump.

Ok, there you go. You’re all caught up

NC State Women’s Teams have a Heck of a Weekend

Published

on

The lads in football fell and the men’s basketball team got devastating news, but the ladies absolutely crushed this weekend.

Women’s Cross-Country

The women’s squad dominated their regional meet, both individually and as a team, to head to the national meet next weekend. Kelsey Chmiel and Katelyn Tuohy once again finished first and second. Six runner finished in the top-25 as the team beat second place UNC by a whopping 39 points. (For some perspective, that’s a big time, no doubt win)

Women’s Basketball

South Carolina rained on the start of the 2021 season, but the Wolfpack came right back into form. Friday, State beat Wofford 90-57, with six players scoring at least 8 points. Kayla Jones ame back stronger than ever with 15 points and a couple of rebounds and assists. Diamond Johnson had her first big game getting 10 points, 7 boards and 4 assists. State outscored Wofford 56-28 in the second half in front of 3500 folks.

On Sunday, they did it again, this time against SEC Florida. Cunane had a game, scoring 18 points with 13 boards as State won 85-52. Unlike the slow start that the Wolfpack had in there first two games, there was no question who the better team was Sunday. State shot 52.5% from the field and 65% from three. The bench put up 29 points and overall the team rebounding was much improved.

State will play their third game in four days, Monday against Towson.

Women’s Soccer

We talked about it a few weeks back, that NO ONE wants to play State soccer in the NCAAT. Although there were nervous moments that they’d even get a bid, State made the statement true Sunday in Tampa. Against #22 nationally ranked USF, State won 2-0 to yet again advance into the second round.

The Wolfpack outshot the Bulls and used goals from Wohner and Joseph (team leading 9th) to win. Friday they’ll head to Tallahassee to face #10 Pepperdine.

Softball

No games, but this weekend was signing day in the softball world…and State crushed.

Just a nationally ranked class, full of studs. Coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift and staff have been doing everything right in getting this program in a spot to be a force in the ACC.

Weekend Roundup: Another ACC Championship for Women’s Cross Country

Published

on

Some highs and lows from around NC State Athletics, let’s take a look.

Cross Country

The State Women’s squad won their sixth straight ACC Championship Friday in South Bend. State runners finished, 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8 to pull out an enormous win. With scores tallies based on finishes (think golf) State scored 20, with second place UNC finishing at 87. A SIXTY-SEVEN POINT GAP. Sophomore Kelsey Chmiel was crowned ACC Champ, finishing seconds before her freshman running mate, Katelyn Tuohy. The 27th ACC Championship is the second most by any program at any school, and first for women’s programs.

The men’s team finished 6th, lead by a 17th overall finish by senior Gavin Gaynor.

Regionals are in two weeks in Louisville, Kentucky.

Football

Wolfpack used a three touchdown fourth quarter to pull away from Louisville for the 28-13 win. Emezie, Pennix, Carter and Riley all had receiving touchdowns. Full highlights can be found here.

Women’s Volleyball

Volleyball split their weekend, beating Clemson 3-1 befor falling to #14 Georgia Tech 1-3. Their upcoming schedule includes two home games this weekend against Louisville and Notre Dame. State, sitting at 7-5 in the ACC, will look to breakthrough into the top-6.

Women’s Soccer

Women’s soccer lost to Pitt 2-0 on Thursday. For ACC Soccer Championships, only the top-6 schools advance. State will have to hope for an invite to NCAA tourney to keep their season alive. Even with an RPI of 34, strong strength of schedule and big time wins, they find themselves on the bubble.

Men’s Soccer

On Senior Night, State men’s team beat Boston College in double OT, 1-0. State had four times the shots on goal before they were finally able to celebrate Luke Hille’s winner, his sixth of the season. They’ll open as the 12th seed for the ACC Tourney, against #5 Notre Dame.

Golf

The men’s team finished 4th out of 10 in Wilmington. Maximilian Steinlechner had an outstanding weekend, finishing third overall at -8.

The women’s squad finished 10th of 18 at the Landfall Traditional. Inja Fric lead the Wolfpack with a -3, tied for fourth overall.
