Offensive linemen rarely get the spotlight, but that changes this season with the introduction of the NFL’s inaugural Protector of the Year Award – and a former NC State star is firmly in the mix.

Former Wolfpack All-American Joe Thuney has been named one of six finalists for the award, which honors the league’s top offensive lineman based on performance, consistency, and overall impact.

Bears OG Joe Thuney
Lions OT Penei Sewell

Thuney’s Resume Is Strong

Thuney’s 2025 season was nothing short of elite.

  • PFF Pass Blocking Grade: 87.8 (best among all NFL guards)
  • Pro Bowl Selections: 4
  • First-Team All-Pro: 3 consecutive seasons
  • Second-Team All-Pro: 2019, 2022

At 33 years old, Thuney continues to play at an All-Pro level, anchoring the Bears’ offensive line and setting the standard for interior linemen across the league.

A Super Bowl Resume Few Can Match

Thuney’s résumé already places him among the most accomplished offensive linemen in NFL history.

He has appeared in six Super Bowls, tied for the second-most all-time:

1. Tom Brady — 10
2. Joe Thuney — 6
2. Stephen Gostkowski — 6
2. Mike Lodish — 6

He is also a four-time Super Bowl champion, adding to one of the most decorated careers ever by a former NC State player.

Hall of Fame Trajectory

When Thuney eventually hangs up his cleats, a trip to Canton feels increasingly inevitable.

If inducted, he would become the first former NC State player enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a player.
Former Wolfpack linebacker Bill Cowher was inducted as a head coach, but no NC State alum has yet entered Canton as a player.

Given his accolades, longevity, and consistency, Thuney’s case continues to strengthen with every season.
