Former NC State guard Matt Able is transferring to UNC, according to Joe Tipton of On3.

Able had narrowed his list to Baylor, UNC, Stanford, UCLA, Miami, Virginia, and UConn before ultimately choosing the Tar Heels. Prior to entering the portal, there was early buzz pointing toward Miami, but that prediction didn’t hold.

Able served as NC State’s sixth man this season, averaging 21.8 minutes per game off the bench. As a freshman, he posted 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 41.6% from the field and 35.5% from three.

Coming out of high school, Able was a consensus 4-star prospect out of Sagemont Prep. Rivals ranked him as the No. 19 overall player nationally, the No. 6 shooting guard, and the No. 3 player in the state of Florida in the 2025 class.

At the transfer level, both Rivals and 247Sports rate Able as a 4-star prospect. Rivals lists him as the No. 31 overall player in the portal and the No. 10 shooting guard, while 247Sports ranks him No. 44 overall and No. 5 at his position.

According to Noah Fleishman, Able becomes just the fourth player to transfer from NC State to UNC, and the first since World War II. He joins Bernie Mock, Fred Swartzberg, and Bones McKinney in making the rare move from Raleigh to Chapel Hill.

Being an NC State fan comes with a certain edge. Ven-Allen Lubin made the move from UNC to Raleigh and was welcomed with open arms. But going the other direction? That’s unforgivable.

Able becomes the fourth NC State player from this year’s transfer portal group to find a new home.
