Check out another amazing film breakdown from Scout Team Sports, this time profiling NC State’s latest transfer portal addition, 6’5” scoring combo guard Darius Adams from Maryland.

Scout Team Sports takes a deep dive into Adams’ freshman tape and explains why Wolfpack fans should be extremely optimistic about this pickup. A former McDonald’s All-American and top-40 recruit just one year ago, Adams’ college numbers took a hit at Maryland, but the film tells a much more encouraging story about his long-term upside under Justin Gainey.

The breakdown starts strong with Adams’ success in the pick-and-roll.
He posted 0.971 points per possession as a ball-handler (82nd percentile nationally) and showed the tools to be dynamic: blowing by defenders, turning the corner, getting downhill, and finishing with craft and length around the rim. You see the athleticism, the long arms, and the ability to avoid contact, exactly the kind of self-creation NC State desperately needed last season.

Next, the video examines Adams as a three-level scorer.
His mid-range pull-up looks smooth coming off screens, and he flashes the ability to knock down threes when defenders go under or sag. While his college 3-point percentage wasn’t pretty, they point to his proven high-school/AAU pedigree (40%+ from three in spurts on the EYBL circuit) and believe the mechanics are still there ( the inconsistencies were largely a product of environment rather than inability)

The idea here is that Adams’ efficiency stats for Maryland are likely misleading. Adams was forced into a massive usage rate (around 26% and higher at times) as a freshman, leading to bad shot selection and lower efficiency. The video compares the situation to what we saw with other high-usage young guards (including a direct nod to the Matt Able situation) and shows how his efficiency and shot quality should improve dramatically in a lower-usage, better-spaced role.

The big-picture outlook?  With NC State’s incoming talent (Preston Edmeade, Christian Hammond, Paul McNeil, and the rest of the roster), Adams steps into a situation with cleaner looks, better spacing, and complementary pieces that let him play to his strengths. He’s the type of guy you take a flyer on. A high reward potential with low risk, and the kind of addition that can raise both the floor and the ceiling for the Wolfpack next season.
