NC State head coach Justin Gainey announced the hiring of Matt Holt as director of scouting in April 2026. Holt, a veteran of basketball operations and scouting with extensive Power conference experience, strengthens the Wolfpack support staff as Gainey continues to build his program in his first season leading his alma mater.

Background and Early Career

A native of Providence Rhode Island Holt graduated from Northeastern University in 2011 with a degree in journalism. While at Northeastern, he served as the head student manager for the men’s basketball team, helping with video coordination and team travel.

Holt began his coaching career as an assistant at Division III Rhode Island College in the 2011-12 season, where he assisted with opponent scouting and team scheduling. He then spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Division II University of New Haven, where he focused on recruiting, player development and game preparation. During his time there, he helped develop standout players, including two-time NE10 Defensive Player of the Year Eric Anderson, and contributed to multiple 20-win seasons.

Rise Through Division I Roles

Holt returned to his alma mater, Northeastern as director of basketball operations for three seasons. In that role, he handled video analysis for opponent and self-scouting, coordinated team travel, and supported academic progress. The Huskies won at least 18 games in two of those seasons and made the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

He then spent six seasons at Nebraska as video coordinator. There, he oversaw film breakdown and exchanges, opponent scouting managed the programs digital catalog and led the team managers.

Most recently, Holt served three seasons at Georgia Tech as director of player personnel. He focused on offensive game planning, opponent scouting, and player development for the Yellow Jackets in the ACC.

Holt also holds a master’s degree in management of sports industries from New Haven and a master’s in educational administration from Nebraska.

What He Brings to NC State

Holt is known for his deep expertise in opponent scouting video analysis and program operations. His track record spans multiple levels of college basketball and includes experience at high-major programs where attention to detail in preparation often separates good teams from great ones.

With his background, Holt will likely play a key role in breaking down film, identifying opponent tendencies, and supporting the coaching staff with advanced scouting reports. Our guess is that he will work closely with GM Patrick Stacy, whose expertise in this area is well documented.

NC State fans should expect Holt to bring professionalism, reliability and a strong work ethic to the daily operations of the program. His experience at places like Nebraska and Georgia Tech means he knows how to help prepare teams for tough conference schedules and the postseason. As Gainey builds the Wolfpack, this addition signals a commitment to a strong support staff that allows the assistant coaches to focus more on player development and recruiting.
