ESPN has released its updated Football Power Index (FPI) rankings ahead of the 2026 college football season, and the projection isn’t nearly as optimistic about NC State as several other preseason publications.

The Wolfpack checks in at No. 51 nationally, which ranks 11th in the ACC according to ESPN’s predictive model.

ESPN’s Projection

According to the FPI, NC State is projected to finish with a 6.7-5.4 regular-season record.

That projection falls below the current 7.5-win total set by Las Vegas sportsbooks.

ESPN also gives the Wolfpack:

70% chance to win at least six games
2.1% chance to win the ACC Championship
4.0% chance to make the College Football Playoff

Lower Than Other Preseason Rankings

ESPN’s outlook is noticeably less optimistic than many of the other major preseason publications.

Earlier this offseason:

Phil Steele projected NC State to finish tied for fifth in the ACC.
The Sporting News and Lindy’s Sports likewise have a higher opinion on NC State entering the season.

While preseason rankings always vary, ESPN’s FPI currently stands as one of the lowest evaluations of the Wolfpack heading into 2026.

Why the Difference?

Unlike traditional preseason polls, ESPN’s FPI is a predictive analytics model that emphasizes returning production, roster strength, efficiency metrics, and projected team performance.

It’s designed to estimate future results rather than simply rank teams based on perceived talent or offseason momentum.

With NC State replacing several key contributors while incorporating a large transfer class, the model appears to be taking a more cautious approach than many human voters.

Plenty to Prove

Dave Doeren’s teams have often found themselves exceeding outside expectations.

The Wolfpack enters 2026 with one of the ACC’s most experienced quarterbacks in CJ Bailey, an upgraded roster through the Transfer Portal, and a coaching staff that has produced at least eight wins in five of the last six full seasons.

Whether ESPN’s projection proves accurate or too conservative won’t be answered until the games begin.

But if history is any indication, Doeren’s teams have grown accustomed to proving doubters wrong.
